I was supposed to have a video doorbell. I have been paying for it but. it's never worked. Service man came out today and gave me a song and dance about how this door bell requires a 2.5 G connection to my wifi and my wifi is 5g. They knew this when it was installed and nothing was done. No chance will they replace this one with one that will connect to my wifi. So it is on me to change my wifi or continue to pay for something that ADT knew didn't work. and now I'm told if I cancel I have to pay off the contract. They have the audacity to charge for equipment that doesn't work. Penalty's for not accepting sub par equipment and service.
I am so angry I have broken my rule to never post things like this here. I just had to let the frustration out before I explode.
So sorry I'll go back to swallowing my anger now.

(68,576 posts)you are on a phone only? I have never seen a connection that didn't have 2.5. Also if you put it on a credit card...have it taken off.

(7,413 posts)They can be turned off, but you probably didn't do that. You can verify that.

(21,756 posts)If that does not help you, do a google search on 'how to connect 2.5g to 5g wireless' (without the tic marks) and check out some of the videos or other links.
Good luck

(9,073 posts)A home wifi will have two frequencies, 5mhz and 2.4mhz. 2.4 will be a weaker signal, but it penetrates walls better.
Most home wifi adapters or modems are capable of both.
By default, most wifi will choose which band to run various things on. It will always try to use the 5mhz first.
However, you can create separate networks so that something can be assigned to the correct band. For example, I have (say) Sympth5 and Sympth2.4 as two separate wifi networks running in my home off the same modem. The reason I did this is because my home office is downstairs and the wifi/modem is upstairs. Because of this, my wifi adapter on the computer kept switching back and forth between 2.4 and 5. I wanted it to stay on the 5 band.
It's incredibly possible you're able to create a 2.4mhz dedicated network the doorbell will work with. The repair guy may have decided he didn't want to bother with it. A kind of "Not my job" attitude.

(11,023 posts)I have a bunch of smart plugs in my house and need to run them on the 2.4 band even though I use the 5mhz for most of my wifi. Pretty much my Alexa and those smart plugs are all that use the 2.4 band.

(9,073 posts)All my smart home stuff runs on the 2.4 band. We do have a mesh covering the whole house, but the network was willing what it would to the point of being actively annoying. Finally I said forget it. This is getting split up.

(34,072 posts)As mentioned below, if you have a router, you should be able to connect. If you have a newer phone which you are using as the sole connection for your doorbell, you may not.
At a minimum, as long as you have a router in your home, at worst you should be able too buy a cheap new router. At best, if your 2.4 G connection has been switched off you should be able to switch it back on. Middle of the road, you may be able to get your internet provider to send you a new one.

(3,257 posts)Every time I moved they wouldn't transfer the contract. I had to start a new one but could not cancel the old one. It was like a never ending loop of hell. I finally got out of it by paying $$$$. And, too top it off, the day I called them to cancel and just suck up the cost, I waited on hold for 8 hours!!!!! I was determined though and stayed on the phone.
I will never ever engage them again. They are criminal.
DO NOT USE THEM!!!!! There are other companies out there that do not require contracts.

(4,465 posts)If they work, they call the police to report a break in and the police put it dead last on their priorities due to so many false alarms.
I use blink cameras with motion sensors tied to my phone. That way I can review an alert and decide what to do. A homeowner calling about a legit break in IN PROGRESS gets an immediate response from the police.
That said, given the police's (over)reaction to such situations, I am not sure I will call the police if I do see a break in. I don';t want blood on my hands over a stolen computer or TV.

(2,336 posts)for the doorbell to use. I have two set up on my router, one is 2.5g and the other is 5g -- I did this to resolve an issue I was having with my TV constantly losing the connection.
Someone else will have to tell you how to do this but it's easy -- I bought my own router, so I looked up that router's name to get instructions. If your cable company supplies your router, they should have instructions.
