I do not have a pacemaker, but know a couple people who do. The device was implanted

(installed? ) in a brief surgical procedure and I believe they came home the same day. After a couple of routine follow-up exams, they were good to go and had few, if any, problems.

Unless Fetterman's situation is more complicated than I understand, getting a pacemaker should not have much effect on his candidacy.

I've known folks who had this combo unit.

I believe it shocks them to get them out of the fibrillations.

those with afib are given drugs to slow it and then get a pacemaker to keep the drugs from slowing it down too much, from what I understand. I just wore a monitor for 48 hours and it showed an out of sink heart beat in less than 1% of the time.

...medications take care of that problem. But if they have to up them, screw it, I'll go for the ablation. Had that to take care of my atrial flutter...and its never been a problem since. Granted for AFIB its a 50/50 shot they get it on the first time, but, I'll do the second if need be. This isn't the 1980's where they have to rip open your chest.

Her erratic heartbeat and episodes of tachycardia caused her to have fainting spells and signs of dementia which were totally reversed and brought both her her thinking ability and physical condition back up to par until her death from cancer 7 years later.
