Inflation, soaring gas prices, can be rough on people like myself who are on a fixed retirement income and also dealing with cancer.
Un-like the Republicans I am not going to blame Biden, the Democrats because that would be stupid. The way I look at it, shit happens and you do the best you can, you deal with it, you ride it out, make sacrifices. I am not going to bitch about. I am going to drive less, spend less, I will adjust.
Biden did not create covid, completely mishandle the covid pandemic which fucked up the supply system, he did not start a war in Ukraine and he is not price gouging like corporations are doing. If there is anybody to blame, it is Trump and the rich fucks of America.
In time things will settle down, people will adjust, it's just the way it is.

(3,869 posts)Try finding a new hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicle right now. I parked my Jeep and bought a gently used Civic to commute. Didn't really want a car payment again, but the fuel savings offset ~75% of it and it will keep miles off the Jeep now that it's a weekend toy.
Wanted to get a new one, but markups are 5K-8K on new Civics. No shortage of trucks on the lots though.

(12,409 posts)Luckily, on impulse, I bought a hybrid that was on the showroom floor ... 2001. A customer took it out for a spin and I told the sales guy, "If he doesn't want it, it's mine."
The guy came back 20 minutes later and walked away. I test drove it. The car had "pep," even though it was a hybrid 4 cy.
Gas was around $2.00 then.
I'm smiling now. Averages 47 m.p.g.

(17,327 posts)How much has it cost you in maintenance over the years, do you figure? Was it a Toyota? They were ahead of the curve on hybrids.
LittleGirl
(8,291 posts)They are rated #1 in customer satisfaction, maintenance costs and drivability etc. were on our third Prius and wont look at anything else when we upgrade. Avg mileage for us is between 35-50 miles per gallon with 11 gallon tank. Change the oil once a year, do the 30k and 50k maintenance and youre good to go. Honestly, I didnt like it at first but before I filled up the second tank of gas (after 350 miles), I wont buy anything else ever again.

(17,327 posts)Just a typo. No big deal. I Googled "first year Prius" and the response was 1997 so it was technically possible that you were still driving the same 2001 model. I thought that was remarkable though. Not a lot of 20+ year old hybrids still on the road.

(12,409 posts)I will trade it in for a plug-in hybrid in about5 years. The first 30 miles of the day are "on the house."

(54,443 posts)We adjusted. We usually take the train or the tram to go downtown anyway. My wife's mom lives in a town a 2½ hour drive from our house, and it has no public transportation in or out. But she just got a new hybrid fuel-efficient car after 13 years of her old one, so we figure we're done looking for new ones for her for the next ten years or so. If we're still driving (or even alive!) in ten years, get back to us.

(60,021 posts)But now feel fortunate for having endured it. My wife and I have always been frugal (we don't like to shop, or eat out, or take big trips). So all that saving provided a cushion for these types of times.
I empathize with all those who are really being hit by prices these days.

(54,443 posts)Fully electric vehicles are still pretty exotic here, though, so we figure it will be at least five years before it's practical to own an electric car if you have to make long trips on a regular basis.

(5,559 posts)My current truck has 200k miles on it and even careful maintenance isn't keeping the rust in check.
Looking to grab a used RAM 1500 in a few months for less than they're going for now. Won't get many miles on it; one commute to work a week, then just hauling stuff around when I need to. If I didn't need a truck to get the trash to the road each week, I'd reconsider - but there is no way I'm wheeling the giant heavy trash bin three hundred yards each week.

(5,559 posts)It gets old really quickly. My driveway is about 1/6th of a mile. Every other week is recycling, so that is two giant 100 gallon bins to get from the house to the road. Can't exactly put those in a normal vehicle either.
Not to mention hauling wood from the back of my property, plus getting hay and straw.
In winter my driveway is 4WD accessible only as often as not, even with me being diligent plowing with the tractor. Drifting is a pain in the ass with that much length and open ground.

(13,921 posts)If they would go back to work from home whenever possible, We could cut the amount of gas and electricity used. prices could come down and the unused portion of our normal production could be sold to any of the euro countries being held hostage for Russian energy.
Same with all the right wingers out there "rolling coal" in wasteful vehicles.

(9,823 posts)and we built infrastructure over the past hundred years that favored cars everywhere, but marginalized people outside of cars.
In other words, you gotta drive. And for a hundred years we did it, because the true costs of the system were externalized, largely onto the environment.
The bill has come due, and we dont know what to do.

Our solar panel company is no longer in existence. But I want an electric car .and those Teslas are mighty fine looking cars. (6,401 posts)Bought it when I knew I was going to drop out of the vanpool (we had someone who worked hourly and she kept taking earlier shifts, me one day driving the van, I found myself falling asleep...with Metallica playing and everyone else in the van was out cold). So I drove to work 3x a week and worked from home 2x. Now I'm fully remote, but I might buy another car next year. I still want to buy that Jaguar (used of course), but that Tesla Model 3 looks very promising. My sister just got a hybrid (didn't want to buy in this market, but her car was on its death throws) and says she is already saving on gas. I might look into it.

(5,851 posts)I just put in an order for an efficient traditional gas-powered car. If I could have bought an electric all wheel drive car (I live in Michigan) for the same price, I'd have jumped at it. I do mostly city driving and an electric car makes sense.
But it's going to hurt to make monthly payments on this new car as it is - I can't afford electric. I'm glad it will take 3-4 months for the car to be made so I can save a little more for the downpayment and make the monthly payments a little bit more reasonable.
I feel a little bit of guilt for not buying an electric car but 1) they're too expensive for me to afford, and 2) the charging infrastructure just isn't here yet.
I'm furious that the gas companies are gouging us so badly.

(4,913 posts)The lots are empty. I would love to try an electric vehicle but the lack of charging stations is a problem. I drive a small KIA and I am going to drive it until the wheels fall off.
What I really like is the new ford maverick hybrid truck, 40mpg. Base price around $20,000. Can't find them anywhere. I think they could be big sellers. Handy little truck with good gas mileage that doesn't cost too much. It's been a long time since there was a cheap good truck.
My very first new vehicle was a truck. A little Mazda, sticker price $9,200. I loved that little truck. It ran really good and it was a 4clyinder, stick, good gas milage. It was black with red pin stripping. It was sharp looking.
