You are doing nothing, ORourke said, only feet away from Abbott. You said this was not predictable, this was totally predictable, and you choose not to do anything.
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin could be heard yelling, sir you are out of line. Please leave this auditorium.
Youre out of line, McLaughlin shouted. I cant believe youre a sick son of a bitch who would come to a deal like this to make a political issue.

(9,908 posts)Was wondering who was shouting at Beto.
Beto wasnt making a political statement, he was stating FACT. The towns Mayor was eating up all press, lights, meeting Reps, Senators etc.
Thought & prayers crap from Gop yet again.
Enough talk
Action is needed

(2,039 posts)plain and simple. Not only are they doing nothing, but they are passing gun laws to make it worse.
And that's the GOP's favorite comeback whenever they are criticized after a school shooting: "The Democrats are making this tragedy all political! How DARE they talk about taking action to prevent another school shooting at a solemn moment like this!!!"
Thank you, Beto O'Rourke! You have such courage and are one of my many Democratic heroes.
I do wish that there had been a massive number of regular citizens there at that moment to back up Beto and begin a chant of "You are doing nothing!"

(68 posts)Did anyone notice that when Abbott was asked if he planned to attend the NRA conference in Houston this weekend, he did NOT say he would not; instead he mumbled something about just taking things one day at a time. Wouldn't dare offend his paymaster in such a public forum, would he?

The Democrats can become the new sane Republican party and the Greens, et al. can be the new Dems. It's got to happen, or humanity will die a fugly death due to wars, greed, climate disasters, pandemics, food shortages, unpotable water, radioactive oceans, etc.

I'm not sure if launching a gubernatorial campaign in Texas on the signature issue of gun control can be that effective.
Beto's totally, totally right, but he needs to transition to attacking Abbott on many other issues as well and not have this be a prominent single issue.

(114 posts)I wish Dems would start responding with: "How is this NOT a "political issue"?" and then read the definition of "politics" from the dictionary. And then challenge the accuse to explain how school mass murders are NOT a political issue.
To me this would be the ONLY appropriate response.

(11,635 posts)Where'd the tv cameras go? They followed him into the parking lot... The lasting image of that encounter is Abbott rote reading "thoughts and prayers" and Beto with his finger pointing up at him saying this is not fucking good enough.

The Mayor speaks for the city, creates the agenda. He may not vote unless there's a tie, but little happens unless he's okay with it, I feel sure.
