"I had no idea who she was. She just was carrying on a conversation like her and I knew each other for years," a community center volunteer who spoke to the Duchess of Sussex told BuzzFeed News.
UVALDE, Texas Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, on Thursday visited Uvalde, Texas, where she donated food at a community center hosting a blood drive and laid flowers at a memorial for the victims of the elementary school shooting that killed 21 people, including 19 children.
BuzzFeed News spoke with volunteers at the Herby Ham Activity Center who accepted the duchess's donations. Photographers captured images of Meghan at the memorial site.
According to blood drive volunteers, Meghan, wearing a baseball cap and a black mask, quietly dropped by the community center's kitchen to drop off two "large" crates filled with sandwiches, beverages, and desserts for blood donors.
"I had no idea who she was. She just was carrying on a conversation like her and I knew each other for years," volunteer Gloria Contreras, 40, told BuzzFeed News. "We were just talking about, you know, the situation and what happened what we were doing here. I told her about us giving out water to the people and feeding them."

Accompanied by a bodyguard and wearing a baseball cap, white T-shirt and jeans, she looked down at crosses left to memorialize the 19 children and two teachers killed in the attack. Ignoring calls from reporters, she placed white roses tied with a purple ribbon at the cross for 10-year-old Uziyah Garcia.
Someone had written on the cross, You will be missed.
The boys father, Sergio Garcia, 35, of San Angelo, Texas, described Uziyah as an energetic, loving and gentle boy. Garcia hadnt spend much time with his son over the last eight months, as the boys parents were in a custody dispute.

I don't need to list their accomplishments here to point out how silly it would be to compare the Montecito mansion dwellers to people who have given as much to this country as the Obamas have.

The poor woman was driven to the point of considering suicide while pregnant.
The British tabloids actually compared her newborn son to a chimpanzee and not a single member or representative of the royal family defended her.
The blatant, explicit, ongoing, and continuous racists attacks and lies were and are, horrific.
I am so disappointed to see racists trolling and bullying her here on DU.
Meghan is an American citizen and an ally to democratic, civil rights, feminist, and human rights causes that we support here on DU. She is using her platform to support and promote these causes, which is commendable. The Archewell Foundation donates money to causes and organizations that she and her husband support.

Meghan and her father have been estranged for years. He was uninvited to her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry after he admitted to staging paparazzi photos, which the Suits alum claimed in her and Harrys CBS tell-all in March 2021 that he didnt own up to at first.
That, for me, has really resonated, especially now as a mother, the duchess said of her fathers inability to come forward with the truth about the paparazzi images. I look at [my son] Archie, I think about this child and I genuinely cant imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child. I cant imagine it. So its hard for me to reconcile that.

Meghan and Harry, youre kind of obligated to let us know.
As for being a fan, I just dont like seeing people slimed for trying to get on with their lives with the resources they have. I dont see them grinding the faces of the poor into the dirt. They have certain resources, which I certainly dont she knows the film industry, for one thing. He was brought up to do a stint in the military and perform charitable works and show up.
I also wasnt a fan of Harrys mum, but the way she died was public and horrible. In my life at the time I was doing a midlife stint in grad school, and keeping godawful hours. Id come into the kitchen for another cup of coffee about 2am and turn on the little tv on the counter. One night, there was the death of Diana.
In the nights and days that followed, I learned more about her charitable work than I ever had before and I realized something. The shy young woman who had once described her intellect as thick as a brick the despairing woman who divorced a prince the glamorous woman of means who could have spent her life jet-setting somehow had found a way to do good in the world.
Diana used what she had: her charm, her warmth, her ability to bring many cameras to the scene. Mother Theresas orphans, children dying of AIDS, children losing limbs to landmines all of them got a good turn in the spotlight and attention was paid to their causes thanks to her. And she meant it. The photo ops were for them.
Youre off this thread if Im not mistaken, but I have a good idea of what youll say next time we meet. Im sure you despise Diana, too. Frivolous woman who only went to finishing school and couldnt hack it as a princes wife. Clothes-horse. Yadda yadda.
Screw that. Sure I have a soft spot for this little family. I look at Meghan and think: California career girl. I look at Harry and think: better use sunscreen in California, you redhead. And good luck to you both.

(16,331 posts)If she was only interested in drawing attention to herself all the time, she'd never have left the spotlight in the royal family behind to move here with Harry. She'd have gotten as much attention as the late Princess Diana got, which turned out very badly for her now, didn't it?
I applaud her gesture.

(59 posts)People are angry because Meghan Markle, who identifies as Black, has said zero about the Buffalo massacre. No flowers, no food, nothing. Yet, she does a photo op in a town that has nothing to do with her?
She's a mother. Cool. She's also Black. Her complete disregard for the Buffalo victims is disgusting and I say this as someone who is, except for the white prince husband, exactly like her but younger, the biracial daughter of a Black woman and a white man.
CatWoman
(79,725 posts)and who are these "angry people"?
and why should Markle give a flying fuck?
I don't recall her saying anything about Buffalo or Texas.
She just showed up and offered support.
I'm black. I'm a mother. And a grandmother. Buffalo surely sickened and floored me.
However, for some reason, this Texas shooting shattered me even more.
And when I read the particulars, it haunted me to the extreme. Can you imagine those children being so brutally shot and riddled with bullets that the parents couldn't even identify them?
I simply don't think you have the right or the ability to tell anyone how to react to any particular public tragedy.
My baby brother lives in Houston and my first thought was of the safety of his grandchildren.

(59 posts)Yell at Markle. She's the one who made it about herself by going to Uvalde. Did you go to Uvalde? I doubt it. Neither did I. Because it was not about me. She went to Uvalde. It is fair for me and other Black people to question why if she could go to Uvalde, why she couldn't go to Buffalo or at least donate food and money as she did in Uvalde. But then again, we're talking about a woman who said she was "Maltese" in college and referred to monoracial Black women as "Nappy by Nature" because of their natural hair styles.
If you don't care, fine. We as Black people are a monolith. But I am Black, too, and this is my opinion. Markle is a fraud and her Uvalde stunt proved it.
CatWoman

(59 posts)I'd prefer to spend my mother's last moments with her, thanks. Also, I'm not a Duchess who is rich and who inserted herself into a tragedy that has nothing to do with her while ignoring a tragedy involving people she claims to be a part of.
Also, I donated what I could to charities that are helping to run food pantries in Buffalo and signed a card of condolence sent to Buffalo by my college's Black Student Union. Thanks for asking!
CatWoman
(79,725 posts)you gave the impression that biracial people should have dropped everything and hauled it to Buffalo
Actually, viola made a big thing about Meghan identifying as Black and somehow not doing the right thing, until I pointed out she identifies as biracial. Now viola is biracial, too. But Meghan is still not doing the right thing.
I dont give a rip how people self-identify, btw.

(4,441 posts)The color of her skin does not inoculate her from the content of her character.
She LIED, and lied REPEATEDLY. Even if you are dealing with racism, and I am a minority myself, it does NOT excuse straight up LYING, and this visit, as I have shown through the link of it, was a publicity stunt and a virtue signalling exercise.
Why do you keep defending a liar? Why do you think the Obamas distanced themselves from them? From BOTH of them.
Also, for the record, I think her father is a grifter too, and she is a chip off of both of her parents block.
BlueLucy
(1,609 posts)You mean you believe the tabloids? How did Obama distance himself? You talk to Obama? Or.. like all the other right wing nuts you are assuming since they were not invited to his birthday he distanced himself? Obama but his birthday bash from 400 to 100 die to COVID.

(4,441 posts)The Obamas ACTIONS told you where they stand. One could get to one hundred 'just with staff' but many notables from Cali were there...including John Legend and his wife, who was in the midst of some bad pr mistakes.
She LIED repeatedly during that Oprah interview up to and including that "I will call him Daddy to pull at the heartstrings" when it suited her. Mind you, all of that photographer bs was already over with.

(37,872 posts)The director of the Uvalde community center where the Duchess of Sussex donated food told BuzzFeed News how Meghans visit unfolded.
On Thursday, Meghan quietly visited the Herby Ham Activity Center, which hosted an emergency blood drive to help victims of the shooting. Director Sue Rankin told BuzzFeed News that late in the morning on Thursday, a member of the duchess's security team walked into her office and told her that Meghan was in Uvalde.
She wanted to come by and just see everything that was going on with the blood drive and to help. Her whole thing was she wanted to help, Rankin said. She was going to be incognito, he told me that she was going to be wearing a T-shirt and ripped blue jeans and a hat and a mask and no one was going to he didnt want anyone to know who she was because she did not want the press attention.
...
Rankin also shot down internet speculation that Meghan visited the center with an accompanying camera crew or personal photographer.
It was not a photo op, she said. I reiterate: Meghan did not bring any cameras with her. She didnt bring any reporters.
In fact, she said, Meghan had expressed a desire to stay at the center for more time, but she and her security team left when Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto ORourke arrived with a crew of news reporters in tow.
