Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence liked to tout his economics degree on his website and at campaign events but in reality his degree was less about bookkeeping and more about housekeeping.
Until Thursday, Spence (R) had claimed on his campaign website that he earned a degree in Economics from the University of Missouri (screenshot here). But on Tuesday, Jake Wagman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch pointed out that this was a bit of a stretch Spences degree was in home economics.
From the Dispatch:
The school says that Spence majored in family economics and management also called consumer economics which earned him a Bachelors of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1981.

(3,299 posts)If you don't contribute to the glorious patriotic conquest of earth, your kitchen table problems are your problem. Wait till the so called austerity of the "grand bargain" strikes after November. Grandma and grandpa will be thrown out in the street, along with the disabled, hungry and homeless.
Too bad, so sad. It's the thirties all over again.

(14,656 posts)I stick by what I said too. Maybe I could have added that
I wish tptb in economics would pay more attention to what
ails my kitchen table budget.

(11,489 posts)Home Economics, in my mind, was a junior high course that gave you basic cooking/life skills (sewing on buttons, balancing a checkbook, etc). For the school to call a consumer economics degree 'Home Economics' seems pretty dumb to me. I frankly don't blame him for calling it an economics degree because it's closer to that than what people think of as Home Economics.
I'm sure he's gotten enough shit over the years about having a Home Ec degree he decided it was easier to start calling it something else.
It is kinda funny though.
