All of the schools I attended while growing up had multiple entrances which were only locked when the school was closed. The idea of somebody coming into a school to harm children was unthinkable.
Workplaces used to be similarly unlocked. I remember the days when you had to go to the "Personnel" office of a company, sit down, and fill out an application by hand. Chances are you had to wander around the building to find it. There were multiple entrances and no security. But I never heard of a workplace shooting until the post office started having problems. And those were often related to really bad management.
Places of worship used to be unlocked. Now you can worship online, to be safe. Grocery stores and other businesses have always been open to the public. To be safe you can pick up your groceries or have them delivered.
I long for the world I grew up in, and I am afraid its gone forever. We've all had our peace and security stolen from us by the gun humpers and their weapons, which are more sacred than life.

Sensible, responsible parents and school staff have something to do with that, of course, not just their own good sense and resilience.

(2,220 posts)I was alive when President Kennedy was still President. There was a time when I felt safe in school. Kindergarten and first grade were for me times when I felt safe. Then our family moved to a conservative town in Texas where vicious dogs had more rights on the streets than children did.
