(21,606 posts)employees and the company for going out of state?
NY has laws to protect abortion providers from extradition to states that try to prosecute out of state abortion clinics and doctors. These laws also protect private records from being turned over to out of state courts. More states that protect abortion rights need those laws.

(7,447 posts)it's pretty clear. If you can force someone to not be able to leave the state for one reason, you can force it for any reason.

Yes true. Prisoners can't cross state lines either without permission, or military members who can't travel a certain radius outside their base without permission. Citing actual crimes or extremely special circumstances is not a gotcha.

(2,966 posts)And it may draw fire in the form of protests and boycotting by anti-abortion assholes at Dick's locations, thus jeopardizing the safety of Dick's employees and customers...because that's how conservatives roll.
I don't know how female Dick's employees can avail themselves of this benefit without sacrificing their privacy on the matter.
I like the idea. I just hope it doesn't end up costing the company a whole lot, and I hope that the privacy and dignity of the employee can be supported.
Hamlette
(15,412 posts)hopefully they won't be the only company to do this
As for privacy, legally an employer has no right to info about the health insurance they provide. Hopefully that will stay in tact too.

Abortion is no longer healthcare.
Its a crime. Specifically murder.

(6,829 posts)Exactly what do you mean by that will depend on the state?
These employees are being offered this because they live in states where its now murder.
Can you clarify what you mean? I never get a straight answer on how this will work. Do you believe every employee of third party insurance companies are pro-choice and wont turn in women to law enforcement?
spooky3
(34,476 posts)1) whether abortion is murder depends on the laws in the state.
2) even where states restrict abortion procedures, they may not be able to restrict travel to states where such procedures are legal. There is some constitutional protection for travel across states.
3) many of these companies will provide travel assistance and payments.
4) insurance companies are not necessarily involved.
Arazi
(6,829 posts)1. If life begins at conception, abortion at any time is murder ipso facto.
2. May not be able is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Missouri legislature is moving to make it a felony to travel out of state for an abortion as we speak. The other states will follow, guaranteed.
3. The money is fine if an employee can access it without legal jeopardy which is by no means assured here by involving strangers you dont know (and shouldnt trust) with this info
4. Ok, so now women have to tell their boss they need time off and reimbursement for an abortion and this is better because

With all of the soon-to-be multitudes of unwanted government mandated pregnancies, there will also be a soon-to-be fuckswarm of paternity suits. So, for all the men out there that want to have their cake and eat it too, get ready!

(2,856 posts)There's way much more at stake. I only pointed out one. The SCOTUS just initiated an avalanche, a flood, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and a whole host of chaos that will come to fruition because of their decision. They're going to go after gay marriage, contraceptives and everyone that is considered LGBTQ. It's going to get ugly (uglier).

(35,724 posts)I needed an air mattress--could have gone to Target, Amazon, etc., but thought Dick's would have more of the type I needed. I phoned out there first and indeed they did have what I was looking for. The person answering the phone gave me their first name and when I arrived, I asked for that person, who took me right to the area where they sold these items. I was in and out of there in 10".
Another item that campers use but gardeners, too, are the little butane tanks to keep Thermacell mosquito repellents going.
So point is, you might be surprised what you can find there.
I very much appreciate this gesture on their part to support women. As far as privacy, I would not be concerned. It will be handled by human resources and very much like what they do with health insurance, would be my guess.

(13,574 posts)Just not clear how soon. Remember we had Ann Richards as Governor. Since then, the fascists have upped their game with propaganda and throwing tons of $$$ into getting repubs elected. I really think the difference is the amount of brain-washing over the last 30 - 40 years on a.m. radio and then Fox Newschannel. The RW has used this state as a laboratory for seeing how the draconian laws (like gerrymandering) will work before they launch them in other places.

(10,749 posts)Now we need to see hundreds of companies implement the same policy on behalf of its employees.
I'd also like to see a commitment from these companies not to expand their operations in those states or not to set up operations in those states.
Like millions of other Americans, I am horrified by this decision. Unfortunately, women of all political parties and religious affiliations are going to be affected by this decision. IOW, women will die, families will be harmed. If you think there was strife between maga and non maga family members, this decision will create further family ruptures.
And we're going to see hundreds of lawsuits regarding infringement on religious beliefs, etc.
And on and on.

(3,007 posts)Businesses will find it harder and harder to find good employees if theyre located in a state with such regressive policies. Theyll relocate.
This may not be the turning point, but if they keep acting this way and, for example, overturn Obergefell, a lot of people will move to states with more modern perspectives. Employees will follow them.

If they were sincere they'd pull out of states that outlaw abortion. These states need to be starved out like Russia is being starved out for invading Ukraine. The world is taking a hit for standing strong. These companies can do the same.

"Along with one support person". Is that discrimination against single employees? Another possibility is they are saying the person obtaining the abortion plus 1 support person and that I wholeheartedly applaud. The phrase just dangles a bit.
