(21,182 posts)Here in California I keep getting emails from our DMV to renew my license online. The pandemic stopped people from going to the DMV so they conducted a lot of business online. I think only new licenses and the real IDs are the only reason to go into the local DMV. A guy I knew told me he went to the DMV to renew his ID ( He doesnt drive anymore) and he was in and out in 30 minutes with no appointment. Before the pandemic without an appointment count on a minimum 3-4 hours.

(22,396 posts)But I have been very impressed with the service over the last 10 years or so.
I only wish private health care insurers were half as efficient.

Hear the arguments about job losses in the insurance industry when single payer national health insurance is talked about!

(7,290 posts)and I do all of my DMV interactions on-line, unless it's impossible to do so (need new driver's license photo, register new vehicle, etc.).
We're often even able to do our emissions testing virtually...they have sensors at various ramps and intersections in the area. Sensors determine the emissions, a photo is snapped of your license plate, and you receive a renewal in the mail. Go on-line, pay the fee, renew your tags, and you're done. 10 minutes in the comfort of my home v. driving to an emissions testing location, waiting up to an hour to get the test.
Once the notice arrives in the mail, it takes me less than 10 minutes to pay for the emissions inspection and renew my tags, v. 3 or more hours to get the testing done and go to the DMV.

(34,086 posts)I tried to renew my license in person at the site a few blocks from my office last time it was due. They had three lines. In the 30 minutes I was there, they didn't call a single person from my line (although they served several people who came in after, me for different services). I gave up, went to my office, renewed it in 5 minutes.
Just like a lot of other places, they are struggling to find and retain employees. And, while it is important to provide in person service for those uncomfortable using an online interface, there is no reason to force the rest of us into a poorly designed and run system simply because it used to be the best/only way to get things done.

(34,086 posts)You know when I last renewed my license - and what the COVID rate was in my county at that time?
It was very recent, at a time when COVID was at its lowest in 2 years.

(34,086 posts)With no movement at all.
Not to mention that jobs change over time. We don't hang on to outdated jobs when there are better ways of doing things. Before computers, there were all sorts of people doing the work that is now done by computers. People used to make wheels for buggies, and shoes for horses. Those were people's jobs, too.
Are you really suggesting we should shun progress simply to preserve specific (outdated) jobs?
What about folks who work non-traditional hours, like my daughter - who is not awake during the traditional DMV hour? What about the impact on the environment and global warming of requiring everyone to renew licenses in person, when simple electronic means are available?
This is just a silly knee-jerk reaction because DeWine is a republican.

(64,933 posts)for several years, and now it will make it easier to renew your license.
Renewing registrations and licenses has always been an effing nightmare for me and have have been doing it for more than forty years. Maybe when I retire and dont have anything to do, I will enjoy going to motor vehicle and staring at the ceiling for a couple of hours waiting for my number to be called.

(1,399 posts)A lot of jobs are superfluous at the end of the day and more will soon be with automization. We will need to start taking things like UBI (Universal Basic Income) more seriously in the very near future; if we dont the right will be more than happy to the drive the narrative for us.
