Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on Friday said conservative Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch misled her about their views on the importance of Supreme Court precedent during their confirmation proceedings in 2017 and 2018.
Collins, who voted to confirm then-President Trumps first two conservative nominees to the court despite her support for abortion rights, has said she believed those justices would hold up important precedents such as Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that established a constitutional right to abortion. A court majority that included Kavanaugh and Gorsuch struck down that right on Friday.
This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon, Collins said, explaining her votes for those nominees during the Trump administration.
Collins joined Democrats Friday in denouncing the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization.

Thanks Republicans for managing to drag us back 100 years.

(9,966 posts)... I don't know what they said to her in person, but I suspect it's the same as their public stance... "It's settled precedent..." YES, true, until it's unsettled! I think Susan's lying... they were obviously being evasive and deceptive. She's smart enough to know that... she's really stupid, or she thinks we are.

(4,554 posts)Most of us knew all along that she was prevaricating.
There was nothing we could do about it unless we were Maine voters. They seemed to still believe in her even after the Kavanaugh hearing. Enuf to re-elect her.
Sigh
Why are we foolish to complain about her?

I don't know very many Mainers, but I have a low opinion of some of the few that I've experienced.
What I know of the State politically is that they like ignorant hicks enough to keep electing them to high office.
In her own analysis, she's a gullible rube not worthy of a position of responsibility.
Alternatively, in my analysis, she's a member of a party of racist violent thugs who don't give a shit about women, want to overthrow our government and install a theocratic government.
She gets re-elected, again and again and again in Maine.

(10,152 posts)Gorsuch ruled that it was OK for a company to let its truck drivers freeze to death. Kavanaugh has been credibly accused of attempted rape, and when he was on a lower court used a number of legal maneuvers to prevent a young immigrant woman in custody from getting the abortion she wanted. So she should have known how they would treat a relatively powerless class.
