AKRON, Ohio — Autopsy records confirm that an unarmed Akron man was struck dozens of times by a barrage of more than 90 shots fired by police officers following a chase early Monday morning.

The volume of gunfire and extensive wounds have caused police and city officials to prepare for potential public backlash. The response is expected to only intensify when Akron Police release body camera footage in the coming days.

“Use of force cases are always ugly. This case is ugly times 10,” a police official familiar with the shooting told 3News Investigates. The official is not authorized to speak publicly about the shooting.

Using a public records law that provides access to autopsy documents, 3News Investigates viewed photos of Jayland Walker’s bullet-riddled body, along with the dozens of bullet fragments removed during the autopsy.

and went to his house later and quietly arrested him, I bet he would be alive.

60 hits sounds like they don't need any more time at the shooting range. sign these and all the officers at this unit up for 60 hours of non violent conflict resolution ?

Maybe some race training as well, cause these are white men shooting a young black man, again

If there isn’t body camera footage to back up their claim, backlash won’t begin to describe the response.

Cops claim he was shooting at them during the chase. "A gun...was recovered inside Walker’s car...It is unclear why Walker fled police. He has no past criminal records aside from a speeding ticket." Another police shooting of an unarmed man, it never stops. The dash cam videos during the chase will be interesting.

Than Bonnie and Clyde combined

OTH I believe Ms Watts has stated certain guns should be limited to only the military and police

Someone is said to have asked a police spokescritter why officers shot at someone eighty-odd times, and for answer got cause they ran out of bullets...

No one involved in that should continue as a serving peace officer, in that or any department.

during a high speed chase on a local highway. There was a gun in the car. Since it was dark, if that happened, the muzzle flash shoud show up on the police vehicle cams.

I immediately thought of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, from right up the road in East Cleveland: Police chase claiming shots fired, ending in a parking lot with 13 police officers, 137 shots (including some fired by police officers standing on the hood of the car). 6 officers fired; 5 later reinstated. All charged were found not guilty.

In the wake of the shooting, the city seems to be acting responsibly - including by canceling a city-wide festival for this weekend

From Mayor Horrigan:

“I completely understand that some residents and guests will be disappointed by the decision to cancel the festival this holiday weekend. Independence Day is meant to be a celebration and a time of gathering with friends and family. Unfortunately, I feel strongly that this is not the time for a city-led celebration,” Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said in a news release.

All vendors and musical acts will be notified and compensated, and Lock 3 will have no activities or entertainment over the holiday weekend, according to the city.

Let's hope that responsible response continues through the investigation, and that any police (and supervisors) who acted inappropriately are disciplined, fired, and (if appropriate) convicted.
