A federal jury has convicted a Southgate man of storming the Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection a crime that involved him pushing past cops, posing by statues inside the building, smoking weed in the Rotunda and then bragging about it on Facebook.
"Was the proudest day of my life lol," Anthony Robert Williams wrote in a social media post obtained by the FBI. "Felt like the founding fathers were smiling down on us in that room, and I guarantee my dad and gramps, both vets, would be proud."
Williams is facing up to 20 years in federal prison when he is sentenced in September.

Seems the DOJ is still not having trouble finding a jury that will convict... Bravo

(47,501 posts)The proudest moment of his life lands him in prison? Someone needs to rethink his choices.

(47,131 posts)Guess he will have some time on his hands now to do some serious self reflection.

(47,131 posts)This guy is going to spend many many hours in his room.
But then again he has a lot of errors to contemplate.
Yes I hope he can find his higher and better self.

(47,501 posts)then I hope he is locked away long enough so he won't do any more damage.

(47,131 posts)hope he is locked up for a long time. I am sure his grandpa and father (who were vets) are not pleased with what he did, unless of course, they were part of kkk or some militia group.

(47,501 posts)think they are living in some action adventure movie. If they really wanted to fight for some noble cause of liberty, they'd have signed up to serve in the armed forces, but unfortunately, there they'd have to follow rules and regulations, which I suppose would infringe on their precious liberty and freedoms.
They want to play the hero without any of the actual commitment and obligations - grown men playing childish games to fulfill their egotistical fantasies, while getting a chance to possibly use their expensive "toys" of war. Grandpa, Daddy, and anyone else who has lived through a real war, would be disgusted with these self-serving frauds. These weekend warriors are enjoying the very real freedoms that their ancestors really DID fight and die for. Get a hobby already guys.

(82,849 posts)Twenty years sounds good to me. It's certainly a shorter sentence than for folks inveigled (some might say entrapped) by the FBI to commit terrorist acts. In this case, Anthony done it all by hisself.
appmanga
(571 posts)three to five years is likely. Even though these people deserve to rot in prison, if they can make a case their sentences are excessive, cruel and unusual, they could wind up winning an appeal.

(1,654 posts)Now that he's been convicted. I hope they follow up on his sentencing to see if he's still so proud of himself.

I am guessing that it is just an empty tribal symbol for many of them. Jesus is not a big fan of that.

(2,412 posts)While I loathe what this man did and the stupid mistakes he made, there is something valuable for us at DU in his words. The words: Proudest day of my life . Are telling. What they tell me is that there is a whole underclass of about 40% of families in this country who are struggling and the men in these families have been unable to provide as in the past. In the past these high school graduates would have been able to support a family. With the Neoliberal economic policies of the past 40 years: Stagnant Minimum Wage, Rising Prices, Rising Real Estate Prices, these men have not been able to support a stable family. They have been deeply humiliated. Their pride has been hurt deeply and they were ripe for recruiting into this crazy Trump cult. Our government let them down. We need to pay attention to that 40%.
