Last week I filled up at a Chevron station that was charging $5 per gallon for regular. Last night I drove past the same station and they were at $4.94.
Still not great, but a little better.

(24,414 posts)I'll feel better when they're under $3/gallon. Wonder if the oil companies are starting to worry about torches and pitchforks?

(23,641 posts)Started last week, and not all stations are the same amount in price drop
In fact the most drop has been at the station who was the first to raise prices to the hilt, and keep them there
I believe they lost business and came down to entice it back

(11,028 posts)May be back up again, I've noticed it dropping in the middle of the week and climbing again over the weekend.

(9,074 posts)Been pretty consistently $5.89 for three or four weeks at Costco, which means it's probably around $6.20 or so at other places.

(3,370 posts)There has been a drop of around $0.20 to $0.30 at most stations that Insee regularly in the Philly suburban area.

(13,911 posts)I don't know how they do it. Consistently the least expensive gas prices around. Most are still around $4.55-$4.60/gallon...

$4.38 at BP this afternoon. Everyone else is usually lower than BP.

(15,286 posts)at $4.99, but one Marathon went to $4.79 for a few days, then when no other gas station followed, went back up to $4.99. Giant Eagle Get-Go price for members went to $4.69, but for non-members stayed at $4.99.
Jmho, but the gas stations are probably not dropping prices to make more profit for themselves as middlemen.

(2,475 posts)Madison Wisconsin area, paid $4.49 the other day which is about $0.40 cheaper than the highs I was seeing a month or so ago.

(12,660 posts)Very few independent service stations, so the gas prices tend to be set by the gas companies. That ensures there's no gas wars.
And boy-howdy do they make sure there's not a lot of difference between what they set and any of the local areas you buy gas from. Maybe a 7 cents difference between brands and a 15 cent difference spread throughout a 20 mile radius.
Collusion?
All I know is that San Diego is really close to a gasoline shipping terminal and there not a long way for trucks to go to get to stations. But gas can be cheaper in the suburbs and x-burbs that it is in the city. Well, outside of the moneyed enclave suburbs/"villages" and tourist destinations, that is.
