If you have 10,000 pilots stop selling 11,000 tickets. FAA should impose fines and passengers given double their money back.

(4,140 posts)(my own companys policy is at least two weeks to avoid high prices). Meanwhile, they often dont know if they are going to have a pilot shortage until hours before the flight leaves. I am just back from Toronto (great city), and my convenient 1 hour 20 minute flight with the 11am departure from YYZ to BDL was canceled at 2 in the morning the day of the flight for crew staffing issues.

(115,735 posts)a lot of no-shows. Sometimes people book multiple flights and then, of course, show up for only one of them. Since an unsold seat is just lost revenue, they typically book 115% in coach to make up for the no-shows. Sometimes they also have to leave some seats unsold in hot weather if they are flying to or from high altitude airports or airports with short runways, because of weight considerations, or if the weather at a destination is so bad they might have to hold or fly to an alternate, which means extra fuel and more weight. More fuel = fewer passengers.

(3,622 posts)The problem is demand on the system.
Each flight operation requires multiple processes to go exactly as planned. In many cases a lot of those processes are dependent on circumstances they cannot control
Reducing demand on the air travel system would reduce the pressure on the processes.

Believe me when I've seen it all.
