Alternatively he can jump before that happens.
Legal experts say hes guilty of multiple crimes.
The damp squib will soon be a prosecuted pariah!
Down he goes.

(15,221 posts)...offset by wondering how many years and years that prosecution will be dragged out, and worrying about a Republican majority taking over before the prosecution is finished, to sabotage it or end it.
Also, if Republicans take over even just the House in November, don't be surprised if they hold all legislation hostage to ending investigation and prosecution of Trump and his minions, happily plunging the country into financial chaos it that's what if takes to save their Orange Emperor (who many secretly hate, but it doesn't restrain their corrupt support or actions).

(2,750 posts)If he can't run for office again that would be fine. Hopefully the full force of the law comes down on this asshole.
He'll probably split to the motherland if charges are coming.
Russia can have him!!!!

(5,843 posts)I mean, Obama chose not to go after Bush for the lies that led us to war and that was unacceptable. However, this is an entirely worse crime: a president who lost an election using his power to foment an armed coup to steal control of the government. This crime is unique in our history.
Unfortunately lots of presidents have lied about war and Nixon was a traitor to sabotage the Vietnam peace talks so he could be re-elected. But as bad as that is, this is much worse. The orange motherfucker used the power of his office to send an armed, violent mob to attack Congress because they were standing in the way of his stealing power. This isn't some wacko faction - well, yeah, it is a wacko faction - but it was led by a PRESIDENT. Then there's all the election sabotaging and attempted extortion of state election officials.
The stakes are way, way too high. Nixon didn't endanger the entire country and system of democracy with his treason. This is a whole 'nother level. If this goes unpunished, we are nothing but a third world dictatorship. The stakes are too high to NOT prosecute.
And the country wants him to be held accountable. This will only become stronger as we have more hearings.
I'm pretty damn sure he won't be let off under some delusion that that would be better than prosecuting sedition.

(10,126 posts)But it will get dragged out with legal gamesmanship.
Appealing every little thing right to the Supreme Court.
And just when you think they've got him, he pulls out his blanket pardon.
Which may not withstand the legal test eventually but he'll drag it out in the appeals courts for a couple of more years of freedom.
The important people to get are those who enabled Trump.
Or they'll be back putting their thumbs on the scales for DeSantis.

(9,670 posts)Because of some internal memo blah de blah blah blah.
I say he'd be announcing his candidacy simply to SUBVERT the DOJ.
The die has been cast long before any official announcements. It would do the American people a grave disservice to pass on prosecuting Trump because it casts the appearance of political persecution.
He'll be prosecuted for his crimes, not persecuted for his politics.

(5,843 posts)A candidacy does not allow him any legal privilege at all. It does not protect him. He has no privilege now - the privilege lies with the current president. He can surely be prosecuted if he announced his candidacy.
Besides, I think he's waiting to see what's going to happen. The tide is turning against him except for his die-hard supporters and they aren't a majority of republicans. If this progression continues, he will make an excuse not to run again because he knows he will lose and he can't stand that. And he'll probably skip the country.

(32,645 posts)In his own mind he's never guilty of anything, we all know that.
He carries these ridiculous grudges against everyone he thinks has "wronged" him.
He won't accept that he did anything illegal or immoral. In my scenario, I can see him going somewhere like Scotland to check on his resorts there. Then we can take advantage of that to bar his re-entry into the country. That would be the best outcome for all concerned.

(523 posts)To convict Trump (or any defendant) requires a UNANIMOUS verdict of 12 jurors. Even in NYC the odds are that any 12 people will include at least one Trumpchump who will die rather than vote for conviction. What we may see is a string of mistrials.

Can states convict WOMEN of these "trumped up" crimes with 12 unanimous jurors without coercion or jury tampering?
Hate like hell for it to come to this.
