Jill Biden's "breakfast taco" may have been an inside joke

Which the locals would have understood, but it didn't play well nationally when bereft of context.

I did some quick searchy searchy, because I wondered if breakfast tacos were an Americanized thing. Instead, I found this rather lengthy article about the origins - and epic War of the Roses level fight - over the origin of breakfast tacos.

Summarized: San Antonio (where Biden was) hates, hates, hates that Austin takes credit for popularizing breakfast tacos, when it was very much their own culinary convention for years.

So the speech writer may have been playing to the audience in the room, but on a national level it just looked like pure cringe.

The more you know.

(None of this story is important. I'm just bored).

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and others registered their offense on social media, with the journalists’ organization tweeting that, “We are not tacos.”

“Using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region,” NAHJ said.

Because it was baffling why a speech writer would be that clumsy. But after reading the article, it made a lot more sense. When someone screws up like that, my first instinct is to wonder what they were thinking. I think it was a play on that.

But that trusts that everyone will know the reference, which is a risk. The more local you aim a comment, the riskier it gets.

Democracy is on the brink but sure, let’s worry about something said about fucking tacos that wasn’t intended to be malicious in the first place. Because we totally have that luxury.

It was unfortunate but hardly indicative of deep seated prejudices. The national room was terribly misread.

And it's nothing like how the right wingers are trying to make it.

And the media also isn't showing what was actually said. Instead they are showing what the Fox news assholes were saying.
