(59,504 posts)While Bolton's book provides details on what various parts of the Trump administration did, the basic fact that the US was at mininimum in support of a couple was out there.
What is interesting is in describing various roles, Bolton makes clear he was the one who most supported what was done. He also wrote of support from Republican politicians, such as Rubio. Clearly, he views pursuing that goal as praiseworthy and blames others in the administration for its failure.
I suspect that with Bolton and Elliot Abrams, the Trump point person there, this was a continuation of the type of Latin American policy of the Reagan years of supporting right wing thugs, the Contras, against the elected government In Nicaragua - even as they killed Jesuit priests and nuns. Then making the bizarre argument that anyone against that policy supported everything done by the elected government.
Here, it is important to remember that it was NOT just Republicans, but many Democrats who favored supporting the Contras, disagreeing just in how to do it. The argument that they supported everything done by the Sandinistas and even Castro was thrown against people not for the Contras. From that background, it is not surprising that Bolton is more interested in arguing that he would have and could have been behind a successful coup had Trump people not dragged their feet.
Think back to the outrage on the right when Secretary Kerry rejected the Monroe Doctrine as then current policy. It is sad that more Republicans znd possibly more Americans might agree with the despicable Bolton rather than the honorable Kerry on Latin America.

US foreign policy is a major global problem.
