The law will not allow us to exile him, because he is a citizen. He can't be deported. All we can do is lock him up.
He got caught because he apparently thought that we couldn't forcibly remove the purloined boxes. He thought we wouldn't do that, but we did. We are well within our rights. He's been caught red handed.
His immediate reaction was to let his base know--which includes members of Congress. (Perhaps he was hoping a swarm of incensed fans would descend on Mar-a-Lago to prevent the FBI from doing their job.) Next, he started throwing spaghetti at the wall, hoping that some excuse will stick. Then, the Repubs all started throwing the spaghetti. It's quite a food fight. But, that's not working.
He offered either a bribe to Garland, or a threat to Garland, or both. That's not working, either. He can easily wait until Midterms, where he hopes the Repubs will regain power. This is a possibility, but not a sure bet. However, if they do win back the majorities, he will be free of concern about pesky classified docs.
He's got his team of lawyers, apparently licensed with a death wish, and they are spinning and arguing for all they're worth (?), but there is not a strong argument to save him. No one is going to believe that he blithely waved a magic wand and declassified our country's most strongly held secrets. Nope, the only conclusion is that he stole those docs.
He's probably hoping that a major, violent uprising occurs that he can take advantage of, but people being, well, people, the floods, droughts, fires, etc--a long, hot summer--will probably persuade most that they should stay home or leave early, before the freeways fill up. Trump can't count on that, either.
We the People are fed up. We are not willing to give up our Constitution, nor are we going to be willing to rewrite it to suit Republican private desires. The fact is, we outnumber them, and armed men trying to scare or overcome the FBI or Courts won't fly. They will simply be killed or maimed, all for Trump.
Trump will always have his mythological thinking that he will prevail. The risk to him is enormous. Some of those punishments run to twenty years in prison. He's done multiple crimes. He can't count on a country club prison where he raises petunias until he dies. Because of his history of causing violence in his followers, he isn't likely to be allowed to stay in any kind of minimum security prison, because his followers may decide to swarm it, or something. So, I'm thinking a Super Max.
I don't credit Trump with being stable, or being able to see anything past the point of his own nose. But, he does pay people to spell it out for him, and I don't buy the notion that he can't figure some things out; his talents simply lie in cheating and grifting. We may have taken his third world country admission cards away, but he will think about how to escape before the FBI--those guys he has officially maligned and called liars--come to take him away.
So, I think he has a Plan A, B, or C, and I think it includes flying or sailing away. Personally, I'd let him go, tracking him all the way, and putting an "apprehend on sight" bolo on his sorry ass. Convict him in absentia. Make sure his face doesn't show up on our shores any more. See if he can run for President from Russia.
If not, Super Max. I'm okay with that, too.

(96,882 posts)You've already decided on the penalty?
EndlessWire
(7,159 posts)As far as my deciding the penalty, I'd be quite content with a 20 year sentence for treason for this guy. But, actually, and if you weren't so intent on...you'd realize that I said he was at risk for a whopping, life-ending sentence. In fact, I don't care if he just disappears, as long as it is permanent. It might turn out to be the best thing for our country. But, no pardon from the President.
Justice? What is justice to you? I didn't write the statutes that clearly and precisely state the penalties for doing the acts that he did. The penalties are laid out by statute. So, why are you so incensed? One of those penalties is execution. But, I don't believe in that.

(96,882 posts)We no longer have "hard labor" sentences; prisons are assigned based on the risk level of the prisoner.

(96,882 posts)Explain why that would be necessary. Do you imagine Trump is going to join a prison gang and shank someone?

Not that I think tfg wouldn't do that if he thought he could get away with it, but no, he couldn't.

(15,311 posts)One small quibble: Even if Republicans take back Congress, this doesnt go away for Trump. The DOJ is in Merrick Garlands hands until at least January, 2025.
EndlessWire
(7,159 posts)they are now trying to impeach Garland. So, I'm not sure where we stand with that.

(7,159 posts)If he has truly stolen classified docs, particularly nuclear docs, or say, the names of all our assets in the world, he will be charged. He has quite some problem now.

(10,252 posts)Not safe for him to be in the prison general population, where someone could stab him for the notoriety. No, a small gray 23x7 cell with no TV and nothing to do.

(29,100 posts)Remember, he has no love for foreigners and if he did he would be at the mercy of a foreign government and foreign staff. In addition he would pose an incredible security risk to our country. He has secret service protection so he could not leave the country easily. Those kinds of movements on his part need to be under their purview and supervision. More likely he would accept a deal for home confinement at one of his properties that could be secured with limited visitors. I think that's the best we could hope for. It's unlikely he would be sent to a federal prison.
EndlessWire
(7,159 posts)We would replace the SS with prison guards. He can waive SS protection. Really that wouldn't stop him from leaving.
The problem for Trump is that he replaced inciting an insurrection with espionage and possibly treason. We don't know yet, but he may have compromised our entire national security. That is not something that might be amenable to simple house arrest. We might send him to prison just like any other treasonous bastard.

(29,652 posts)Obviously guilty. Living under Putins thumb forever.
Save us taxpayers millions in legal, security and pension dollars.
If he goes to prison it will be one of those white collar prisons. Where he can still make deals and rile his followers. Hell be a martyr/victim of libs.

But I'll bet the farm that ain't gonna happen.
EndlessWire
(7,159 posts)My prior posts, long before this latest crime he did, have stated that I would be content with him just sailing away forever. As I have done here.
It isn't my fault that it came to light that he has committed crimes under the Espionage Act. That's way more then inciting a riot wherein people died. Way more. He has acted a fool and placed himself in jeopardy.
He is a threat to our Democracy and his party is Fascist. So, it would make me feel safer if he is locked up. But, I'd let him sail away, as long as he never returns.
I think that most of our farms are now owned by China, so I don't think you can bet them.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)And my farm is owned by me. All my lonesome self lol. Just me, the dogs, cats, chickens, and all the wildlife that make it their home too.
Naw, it's all mine, so I can bet it if I wanna. But I'm pretty sure that's a safe bet.
I haven't even had an offer from China durn it!

(25,819 posts)Maybe that would help persuade many of his followers to abandon him. In jail - he's out of sight and out of mind. Until that happens - he will continue his lying act and will continue to haunt us.
It's the only way. He needs to be jailed, lose his companies, money, real estate and freedom.
Again - maybe then it will sink into the minds of his cult that he is a criminal that committed treason and made them all look like fools because he conned them out of their money and minds.
