The executive producer of Meet the Press, who NBC announced last week is shifting over to the streaming side, was pushed out amid the Sunday politics shows ratings woes, two people familiar with the matter told Confider.
John Reiss, who had been EP for the last eight years, was officially punted over to the NBC News Now streaming service, and David P. Gelles, a long-time CNN producer who helped develop the now-defunct CNN+ streamer, was parachuted in to help fix the sinking show, which is down 21 percent in total viewership and 24 percent in the key advertising demographic compared to last yearmore than any of the other Sunday politics shows.
Gelles first order of business, multiple sources said, is deciding what to do about Chuck Todd, who despite recently signing a two-year extension, as Confider has learned, has baffled many at NBC with how long hes remained atop the struggling show.
NBC White House correspondent Kristen Welker is being groomed to replace Todd, multiple insiders with knowledge of the matter said, and is expected to take on more hosting duties as the midterm elections approach.

I find myself watching it less and less these days (Washington Journal). What can I say, I wake up early. I used to enjoy hearing what people across the country are saying, but the sheer willful ignorance of the republican callers is hard to take.

He should have been out after his first MTP show:
http://legacy.buzzflash.com/videos/video/letterman-needles-chuck-todd-for-bad-mtp-obama-interview
Though I know Dave Gelles, I haven't seen him since Covid began, and had no idea he was involved in trying to save MTP. Maybe I should send him a note pleading to bring the show back to the successful format it used to become a household institution in the first place: a forum with a revolving three journalist panel, selected for their being correspondents covering areas pertinent to the guest. My dad was on MTP various times when the guest was, for example the governor of New York because he beat was Washington happenings that affected upstate NY and the Great Lakes. The moment it turned into a grandstanding platform for the host (i.e. Tim Russert), it started to lose relevance precisely because the audience did NOT "meet the press," and neither did the guest. "Meet Tim Russert" was never a good reason to turn on the TV on a Sunday morning, and "Meet Chuck Todd" is an even worse one.

(128,932 posts)It was horrifying - and moreso for someone like me with gardening as a hobby who listened to WOR's "Garden Hotline" to hear horticulturist and talk host Ralph Snodsmith for 30 years. When Snodsmith was having health issues and had subs to do his show, it was right around when WOR allowed NBC to take over an hour of the show to simulcast Gregory's bullshit every Sunday, right in the middle of what was an 8 - 11 am/3 hour slot.
They eventually dropped the last hour of that garden show.
Gregory was host from 2008 - 2014 and WOR started doing that simulcast around 2009 - 2010 and kept it in place until he was gone in 2014 (eventually cancelling the "Garden Hotline" show not long after Snodsmith died in 2010).
hlthe2b
(102,247 posts)it as it seemed Chuck Todd's backstabbing was quick and decisive in turning out Gregory. I guess it unfolded considerably more slowly than I remember.
BumRushDaShow
(128,932 posts)But in this case, since Schmuck had multiple "roles" - both on NBC and MSNBC, his bullshit was more spread out, going across 2 networks, so he could amplify and double-down on himself, but would spare people who didn't watch all of the programs he appeared on.
