Got a text from the USPS that looks very authentic saying that they have a "problems with my shipping address". I was directed to their website and there they want me to give them my updated address and phone number. It looks amazingly like the USPS site but, in the address bar i noticed it reads: capeafricanhunting.co.za. That website takes you to a company offering safaris. Things are getting really phishy out there.
Hopefully I didn't give them any information just by visiting the site. Anybody else getting this?

(34,092 posts)Unless you have actually given that entity your contact information. It's always a scam.
My spouse is constantly asking whether I paid for something with PayPal because a scammer has sent her an email.
My question to her: Do you have a PayPal account? Did you ever give PayPal your email address? Then why are you even opening the email - you know it's a scam.
Same thing goes for the USPS texting you. They would have no reason to have your phone number - so if you are receiving a text from an entity that you did not give your phonbe number to, it's a scam. Delete it. (But - if you've registered your number with the Do Not Call List, report it before you delete it.)

(13,873 posts)The number changes each time so I can't block it, but it is admittedly very well done. An old friend from college and someone I worked with about 10 years ago keep sending me a link that says "Just came across this photo. I know you will recognize the two people on the left."
I've never hit the link of course, but that is a pretty enticing message to get (apparently) from someone you know well, and likely to get opened.
Both of those old contacts of mine have said their phones were hacked and everybody in the contact list gets those emails.

(34,092 posts)It's still worth it to file a report if you're on the do not call list. At least one of the ones who kept switching on us got caught, and the multiple numbers they were using (or spoofing) helped increase teh penalty.
I don't think I've gotten a phone hack - but I've gotten numerous email hacks. Those are harder to sort out than the ones which purport to be from businesses to which you've never given your number/email addresses.

The most common scams are from Trump and family and associated republicans from around the country.
Once you get on their lists, you get gazillions looking for donations.
