Here's another sign high U.S. inflation is starting to wane

ECONOMIC REPORT

The highest U.S. inflation is almost 41 years appears to be starting to ease.

The first sign came in July in the form of tumbling gasoline prices. Now a measure of what businesses pay for supplies is also signaling that inflation is loosening its iron grip on the economy.

The so-called prices paid index in a survey of manufacturers fell in August for the fifth month in a row, the Institute for Supply Management said Thursday. It also slid to a lowest level in more than two years.

The index dropped to 52.5% in August from 60% in the prior month and recent peak of 87.1% in March. It’s now back near pre-pandemic levels.

on a holiday week, up from $1.25 the last time they were on sale.

Seems like the things I buy are always up 50-60% when we only are supposed to have 9% inflation annual rate. And 3 ounce cans of Fancy Feast are going $0.88 to $0.90 each when they used to be $0.55 to $0.60. That's when you can find them in stock.

Why pay any money for sugar water in the first place?

I'm sure this will get me slammed for being elitist or some such, but when I'm in the grocery store and see people buying three or four or more of those huge cartons of soft drinks, I'm astonished. Why?

My food costs have actually gone down these past two years. I eat out maybe once a week, usually less, compared to the three or maybe more times each week before the pandemic. I am making meals from scratch, often in large enough quantities to freeze. Some weeks I only need to go to the grocery store if I've run out of half and half for my coffee.

What also helps me is that at various times in my life I was relatively poor, and learned to make do with a very limited income. Now that I'm retired and living again on a limited income -- although one that is higher than I've ever had before in my life -- I am finding it easy to afford the things I want to afford.

I know, I am very fortunate.
