Old article: Here's what Jimmy Breslin had to say about Donald Trump decades ago

Jimmy Breslin took a look at one of New York's biggest characters, Donald Trump, and saw a chump.

The legendary columnist, who died Sunday, was an original champion of the working class, using his space in the Daily News and other papers to spotlight heroes and villains for ordinary New Yorkers.

And many years before Trump's unprecedented rise to the presidency, Breslin summed up the fellow Queens boy as an enemy of the people.

In the '80s and '90s, Breslin saw through Trump's worst instincts — his bullying and bragging, his cheapskate scams, his abuses of the press and the public — while most metro media marveled at the real estate mogul as a symbol of success.

Trump had THE chance he and his father always wanted, to conquer Manhattan real estate. I can look up the story but this is from memory.

Trump got the rights to develop a large section of land. Ed Koch was Mayor and he begrudgingly worked through some tax abatements. Condos, retail, etc including a massive tower - shaped like a rocket of course - that NBC was going to move to from 30 Rock.

The community said HOLD ON - we need low income housing, parks, etc. Paul Newman was involved. All Trump had to do was go to these public hearings, sit on stage, shut up, and then say thanks for everyone’s opinions. He couldn’t do it. Shunned them really. The whole thing fell through.

Everything he wanted was sitting right in front of him and he couldn’t just not be a jerk.

I've followed TFG's wheeling and dealings since the early 80s. I was fascinated by the NY mob scene and imagine that, TFG came up in my readings. Not sure he ever had any shot at any naval properties but he sure jumped on the Penn Central holdings and through a complicated series of half-truths and full out lies acquired the rights to them.

1) Copy the link for whatever article you want to read that is behind a paywall.
2) Go to https://archive.ph/ this is the web page archive site

Archive.today is a time capsule for web pages!
It takes a 'snapshot' of a webpage that will always be online even if the original page disappears.
It saves a text and a graphical copy of the page for better accuracy and provides a short and reliable link...

3) Search for an archived copy in the black search bar, with a few options included as additional links. If your search comes up empty then...
4) Archive it yourself in the red search bar. It takes only a couple of minutes and then you have an archived version of the article for yourself and others who may want access to the article.

I hope you find this helpful.

and there's a good reason NY and New England didn't vote for him. He was well known to be a swaggering rich bully boy who didn't pay his contractors and cheated on his taxes and treated women like Kleenex.

But damn, he sure fooled 'em in Dixie.

That's probably what got Breslin too disgusted to write.

Inherited half a billion $$$$$ and used much of it to buy "big success" publicity. Corporate media was happy to help. Never did an honest day's work in his life and declared bankruptcy at least six times.

Too much corporate media doesn't seem to want to differentiate inherited wealth from earned wealth. Money is money is money is money. TFG is living proof that inheriting a fortune does not require any kind of brains or talent.
