Val Demings, Democrats target Sen. Marco Rubio's anti-abortion stance to knock him out in November
Abortion rights has emerged as a flash point in the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Sen. Marco Rubio and U.S. Rep. Val Demings.
Democratic candidates across the nation have seized abortion rights as their banner for the mid-term elections with the hope that voter anger over the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade will drive angry Democratic voters to the polls in November.
In the wake of the high court's decision, Democrats have pledged to codify abortion rights as federal law if they maintain control of Congress and are organizing voter registration drives around the contentious issue, while many Republican-dominated state legislatures across the country are moving to ban the procedure.
The optimism among Democrats is bolstered by Kansas activists soundly defeating an abortion initiative, races for Republican-held Senate seats in Ohio and Pennsylvania unexpectedly becoming competitive, and Democrats last week flipping a New York congressional seat that a Republican was expected to win.
