Camp Lejeune and Class Action lawsuits

We have all seen the ads on tv regarding this. Let me share my thoughts here.
Disclaimer, having never been a marine and spending time at this location I have no reason to join in this suit.
Many years ago, when these type suits became more public I would get mail asking me to join in as I was a member of some group who were eligible for significant rewards. I signed up awaiting all the money I was going to receive. Later I did receive my reward, something like $1.50 off on my next flight to Arizona or a similar reward.

Side note here, last month I received a check for 0.76 from AT&T in settlement of a slight from them. Don’t recall ever signing up for this but the check did come. I tore it up and tossed it.

Had a discussion with a young man regarding the Camp Lejeune thing. His contention is the trial lawyers lobby in D.C. got the government to pass a law allowing people to sue the government. My reply was all laws are passed because lobbyists buys our elected officials. We have to find a way to get the money out. He was not comfortable with my reply but let it go. This discussion brought to mind a discussion I had with my Dad back in the 80s or 90s.

There was a proposal on the Michigan ballot regarding automobile insurance. I told my dad I didn’t know how to vote on it yes or no. Told him the insurance companies were opposed to it. He smirked a bit and said “Well if the insurance companies are against it there should be no question as to how you should vote.” I replied “aye but the trial lawyers are for it.” He then said “Oh man, now you have given me something else to worry about, I have to worry about trial lawyers.” To which I said. “sorry don’t want you to lose any sleep, forget I even said it.” End of discussion.

Stopped signing up for any and all class action lawsuits after the dismal return I got the one time I did. But now, after giving it further thought my mind is changed.
With the laws and regulations, we are currently living under, trial lawyers and class action lawsuits are the only way us “piss ants” have of striking back at “the man”.

I did find a link where you can file a claim without going to one of these trial lawyers.

File a claim

Fill out the Camp Lejeune Family Member Program Application (VA Form 10-10068). If you need help with your application, call our Camp Lejeune Family Member program staff at 866-372-1144.

against some company or another. I want to say it was telecommunications, but as I type it that doesn't seem right, either. Regardless, I didn't follow up or contact the law firm or whatever, and I never heard anything more from them. Guess I missed out on my $3.19 settlement.

As to those commercials, it's a low bar to clear, but guess it's a break from the endless Mesothelioma and Shatner/Walker/Namath spots.

The USMC has been very, very good about sending out information, holding informational meetings, and keeping us all updated from the beginning. They're not being anything but helpful and transparent. My adult children want nothing to do with going through trial lawyers. But we have had no health problems to make a claim for.
