"SNIP......
Pennsylvania U.S. Senate candidate Mehmet Oz (R) said uninsured Americans dont have the right to health, but should be given a way of crawling back out of the abyss with 15-minute physicals provided by the government in a festival like setting.
.....SNIP"

(23,314 posts)Were a self employed family and thus are self insured. I pay $1955 a month for mediocre insurance for the three of us in this household. Thats just for my little family. I pay health insurance premiums for my employees who arent covered by a spouse or a parents plan. Yep, Im a job creator that provides benefits Its SO much money I cant even speak to it and it pisses me off that people like Oz think that getting access to healthcare is so fucking easy or that people that dont have insurance arent doing enough. Ive never NOT had insurance and Ive still had to refinance my house three times to cover medical bills. This kind of thing puts me into a rage.

(12,904 posts)For a person without access to any follow up care? A festival type setting? Like they are celebrating their good fortune of having a stranger look at their body for 15 minutes?
That man is nasty. Even his daughters dont want to have sex with him. Yeah

(90,683 posts)Maybe the doctor should attend one of those mass dental clinics that Ive read about, where at the end of the day there are still long lines and there are literally buckets full of extracted teeth that are too rotted to be saved. In America.
A 15 minute physical? Yes, Ive had those. My doc goes over my screening work and prescribes things and gives me a follow-up appointment and referrals.
What the hell good does it do to tell someone their blood pressure is thru the roof, or their heart sounds bad, or they have a funny bump that should be biopsied, if theres no follow-up available? I remember the free mammogram efforts that would turn up women with such metastasized cancers that they were in effect told to go home and arrange care for their children who were soon to be orphans.
What an idiot.

(66,361 posts)But what the hell kind of doctor thinks a health-maintenance physical exam can be done thoroughly in just fifteen minutes? My annual physical exams are a minimum of thirty minutes, and can run to close to forty-five minutes, depending on the patient. I always schedule annual physicals for last appointment of the morning, or last appointment of the day, so there are no other patients waiting, and I can do a good thorough job. (And also so I can take a break afterwards; they can be tiring.)
What a monster. "Don't have a right to health." What a vile thing to believe.

(8,922 posts)dont get sick; i.e., Americans dont have a right to health. Their message, his message, is very consistent. Always.
15 minute physicals = shit.
Why anyone would think this idea is right and vote for it is beyond comprehension and shows either little understanding or just void of compassion for the suffering of others.

(10,828 posts)As for the access in these 15-minute physicals? We had yearly 'festival-like' medical exams in TN. The lines of the uninsured were incredible and though the physicals were free, the medical treatment was not. I can recall one man who had a serious hernia situation, bad enough he could not work bc of the discomfort (the man was bent over, literally holding his protruding abdomen in his hands). The examining physician said without surgery he was at risk of infection, even death. That sort of diagnosis doesn't help if you can't offer a medical remedy, as in free or reduced-cost services. The physician told the man the required surgery would cost approx $20,000. Btw, my much less involved hernia surgery and appendectomy cost $35,000+.
The dental clinics did offer on-site dental work by participating dental schools and students.
So, this sort of statement by Oz may make the Repugs feel better about their stingy view regarding healthcare but in reality it offers very little to patients who need expensive followups of imaging, medication and/or surgical treatments. It's not the patients who get to 'crawl out of the abyss." It's the uncaring politicians who reject the idea that healthcare should be a right, rather than a costly privilege.
Well, at least we did something, they can say to themselves.
May they all rot in hell!
