(3,491 posts)Hes been waiting to be King for a long, long time. And given the general longevity of his line, will probably reign for a good 15-20 years.

If the Queen trusted him, thats good enough for me.

(29,705 posts)he was killed while still in his crown.
Ocelot II
(115,683 posts)Charles II, in contrast, was one of England's most popular kings. He was restored to the throne in 1660 after the monarchy was suspended by Oliver Cromwell, who was not popular at all. Just being named Charles doesn't point in one direction or the other.

(29,705 posts)about the first guy. He committed a sort of genocide in Wales and our family was all either killed or fled.
Ocelot II
(115,683 posts)TFG would have liked him.

(6,080 posts)He's an ok fellow and definitely deserves to be given a chance. He is a noted environmentalist, so that goes far in my book. He's just a figurehead but he may do good things for conservation.
As far as the whole marriage to Diana fiasco, it was a different time. He loved Camilla and wanted to marry her but she wouldn't do it back then because she was divorced and didn't want to upset the monarcy. Charles did what he thought was his duty to the crown and country. Poor naive Diana got caught up in the princess fantasy and her childhood crush. And she also didn't want to upset the monarchy when she found out about Charles and Camilla before the wedding.
I wish King Charles and his queen consort the best.

(6,251 posts)We Democrats have been whining for nearly 20 months about the presidential transition, about TFG's flagrant disregard of the norms, standards, and traditions of the last 230 years or so.
So, let's try not to whinge about the Brits following their norms, standards, and traditions of the last 950 years or so.
(And there's no way that Charles will abdicate. His grandmother, Elizabeth the Queen Mum, was convinced that her husband, George VI, died well before his time because of the abdication of his brother, the Duke of Windsor. The Queen Mum believed that the stress of taking the throne, making speeches despite his speech problems, and leading his country through WWII led to his death at the age of 56. Charles and his grandmother were very close.)

(25,300 posts)The Monarchy has very little power.
There is some like calling war and dissolving parliament.
I've watched The Crown and Elizabeth was always having to bite her tongue.
Sure Charles doesn't have much charm and his treatment of Diana was pretty deplorable, but the UK will be just fine.
I think royal family tourism and fanhood is gonna take a hit until William can get in.
So we have lost lovely theater for awhile...
We lost a beloved celebrity
However the UK will be fine
