General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forums8am September 9, 2022, The Queen is still dead. This is going to dominate the media
coverage for 10 days now. One talking head after another is on the TV basically saying the same damn thing over
and over. I turn on MJ and CNN to hear the news that matters, and it is all about the Queen. Why do we have this
fascination for a filthy rich dysfunctional family? I am sorry she passed away, but she was 96 years old. Talk about
oligarchs this one family ruled for centuries and even today they support them when they have no function other than
a tourist attraction. I have more respect for Harry than the entire family, he got out.

(22,724 posts)Last night ABC, NBC and CBS evening news devoted almost their entire broadcast to the Queen. Seriously this is crazy. There is more news than this that people like me would like to hear about. There are hurricanes, fires, heat waves, Bannon, Jan 6th committee, Right-wing Banana Republican judge and the DOJ, etc etc all being ignored for this constant coverage of the queens death.

(32,083 posts)Keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to get some actual news on PBS, but I suspect it will only be when they're running DW and NHK broadcasts. Hopefully the News Hour will not get sucked into the days-long wallow-fest. I can live with this for a day or two, but any more is ridiculous, especially given the grave situation here in our own country. We can't afford this kind of distraction, and for so many days.
I don't get the whole fascination with this family, either. I don't hate them, but nor do I give a fuck about any of them. She wasn't my Queen. Our country fought a bloody revolution to get free from her family. Why do so many people here want to keep going back to them?

Starting yesterday. I ran through all of the US networks and it was the same horseshit.
So, Ive lurked here on DU reading the tributes from bonafide Statespersons and read the posts and opinions of real people. (Good and bad.)

(5,499 posts)That was an important time in the history of the world and she witnessed it first hand. But other than that she was a figure head who severed little more purpose than a commemorative statue.
She wasn't a leader. She didn't really use her position to speak out. Occasionally she'd drop a sentence here or there but most of what she said was filler.
Most of what she did was an effort to ensure the preservation of the monarchy.
I predict that in 10 years the monarchy will be a little more than a side circus where for 5 pounds you can try on the crown, assuming it hasn't been ponned.

(766 posts)I get that there are a lot of people hypnotized by right-wing media, which is a major problem. But that doesn't mean the rest of us need to be glued to the TV all day too.
Ditching cable news and most social media is better for you anyway. YouTube is ok, depending on what you watch. There's plenty of good history content on there, for example. Or cat videos

It feels like the cable news addicts are the most affected by all this. One day of disruption, and the withdrawal irritability is real.
I'm enjoying the change of pace. I do not yet know, whether or I want to or not, how many times Trump sneezed so far today.
It's delightful.

(18,649 posts)To go to work, that will take up quite a bit of time. When I get home I'll watch the news to get an update on her condition. Friday night I get together with family and friends to play games, the TV won't be on.
I will occasionally check DU to note various threads talking about how someone is tired of hearing about/ wish people would stop talking about ________.

(15,609 posts)Or until a bigger, newer story comes along.
The only thing that could push the Queen from the headlines would be a Trump indictment, and I dont see that happening imminently.
Soon enough, the J6 committee will reconvene, and debates in key races will begin happening, and the news will again be filled with important stories.
