New York declares state of emergency over polio to boost vaccination rate

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday declared a state of emergency over polio to boost vaccination rates in the state amid further evidence that the virus is spreading in communities.

Poliovirus has now been detected in sewage samples from four counties in the New York metropolitan area as well as the city itself. The counties include Rockland, Orange, Sullivan and now Nassau.

The samples tested positive for types of poliovirus that can cause paralysis in humans, according to state health officials.

New York began wastewater surveillance after an unvaccinated adult caught polio in Rockland County in July and suffered from paralysis, the first known infection in the U.S. in nearly a decade.

1. I live in New York State and I haven't heard of any other cases of polio except for that first one

Meanwhile, Covid rates are still in high community transmission in my county.

Gov. Hochul just made masks optional on the subways, and tweeted out a picture of the most ridiculous sign (that is now hanging in subway stations) showing drawings of people improperly wearing masks with their noses and their mouths hanging out and saying, "Yes!" and "You do you." Public health is "You do you" now?

This doesn't make any sense to me. I've been so disgusted with everything lately.

4. I have little faith in what the CDC says anymore, unfortunately. Through their horrible messaging,

people are walking around maskless and acting like Covid isn't an issue anymore. Meanwhile, 10,000 - 15,000 Americans are dying of Covid every month.

My husband and I are vaccinated for polio and so are our 3 children.

The same plague lovers who refuse to get Covid vaccinations and won't wear a mask are the same people who won't get polio vaccines. They will send their kids to school and go out in public maskless while infected with polio. And nothing will be done about them because no one wants to rock the boat.

If polio becomes an issue, we are screwed, just like we will be forever screwed with Covid because politics is put above people's lives.

3. Waiting to hear from the anti-vaxxers

God’s will..Jesus will save us…freedom..lib propaganda…I remember the terror of polio, parents keeping their children home..no swimming in public pools, no birthday parties..everyone knew someone who had contracted polio..a child paralyzed in an iron lung … and I remember first grade standing in line, anticipating the needle, trying desperately not to cry..and the fudge pop waiting for us at the end of the line..58 years later I still like fudge pops…

5. I just had my bivalent moderna booster

Yesterday. Next will be the polio booster. I think there is one for that now, I hope. Maybe I am confusing it with smallpox. I was vaccinated for both of those as a child but I think they were rec a booster for polio now.
