Exclusive: 'I'm just not going to leave': New book reveals Trump vowed to stay in White House

(CNN) — Former President Donald Trump repeatedly told aides in the days following his 2020 election loss that he would remain in the White House rather than let incoming President Joe Biden take over, according to reporting provided to CNN from a forthcoming book by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

"I'm just not going to leave," Trump told one aide, according to Haberman.

"We're never leaving," Trump told another. "How can you leave when you won an election?"

Trump's insistence that he would not be leaving the White House, which has not been previously reported, adds new detail to the chaotic post-election period in which Trump's refusal to accept his defeat and numerous efforts to overturn the election result led to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by pro-Trump rioters.

Haberman's book, "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America," is being released on October 4.

They have had so many chances-- like the Mar-a-Lago search warrant results-- to back away from him, and they just keep defending whatever he does, or try to distract-- "They photographed it wrong!"

They can't seriously think that it's a good thing for a loser to refuse to leave.

I want to ask them, "Do you want to set a precedent here-- that Biden can just declare he wins and refuses to leave like this?"

But of course, they don't want this to be a general rule. It's only right for Trump, in their mind. And why? Just because he's the big bully?
They're craven and stupid and self-destructive, and I hope the destruction happens soon.

employed. He made a conscious decision to keep behaving like an incorrigible child. No adults kept him sufficiently accountable so he became a residivist.

Speaking about President Trump’s and his legal team’s myriad and baseless claims of massive voter fraud, an anonymous senior Republican official offered a rhetorical shrug.

“What is the downside for humoring him for this little bit of time? No one seriously thinks the results will change,” the official said. “He went golfing this weekend. It’s not like he’s plotting how to prevent Joe Biden from taking power on Jan. 20. He’s tweeting about filing some lawsuits, those lawsuits will fail, then he’ll tweet some more about how the election was stolen, and then he’ll leave.”
