Not enough room on the table and no other surface to move the tray to, etc. Now, spilled ink on those documents would have been a "royal" pain in the arse, n'est-ce pas?

he is just motioning for them to move the inkwell. What was he supposed to do? Take it and stuff it in his pocket?
