It's genuinely odd that DeSantis couldn't find 50 migrants in Florida to send to Martha's Vineyard

James Surowiecki (@JamesSurowiecki):

Immigration is generally a winning issue for the GOP. But DeSantis' scheme was so sketchy - tricking ppl onto planes, moving ppl who weren't even in FL, using taxpayer money in legally dubious ways - that it feels like he overplayed his hand a bit.

I don't think this was the humanitarian disaster some have suggested - not obvious it's worse to be in MA than San Antonio. But everything about the scheme was super-shady, and going to TX to find migrants to ship makes the fact that this was just a PR stunt crystal clear.

Given that he's been saying for more than a year that Florida is being inundated with "illegals," it's genuinely odd that DeSantis couldn't find 50 migrants in Florida to send to Martha's Vineyard, and instead had to send ppl to Texas to find them.

they might. This is a right to work for less state so my guess is no one wants to work split shifts at lower wages. But, what type of jobs are they trying to fill in their restaurants?

I am NOT being mean or sarcastic, just wondering .

They say they have been "forced" to pay more to fill the positions, and it's starting to dawn on them that they have to pay even more still if they want to keep the jobs filled.

I smile.

The Cuban-American and Venezuelan-American voters wouldn't like it. Thus he figured sending migrants from Texas would make his point and not get anybody mad at him. He did however use Florida taxpayers' money.

any gated community, on any given day, will find hundreds of undocumented people working hard in the blazing sun. All serving the needs of gop voters.

Most of our landscapers are undocumented, although the owner isn't. They are terrified to talk to anyone, especially someone like my father who is fluent in Spanish.
