Unlike the UKR forces who have outstanding intelligence around the positioning of Putin's forces (combined with guided munitions that can accurately hit such targets) the Russians have few such assets.

Instead, their doctrine involves so-called "intelligence by battle," which means they throw "cannon meat" against enemy positions in suicide runs that are designed to show Russian commanders where the enemy units are situated.

So they gain "intelligence" while ridding their society of "undesirables."
