CNNHouse Democrats, who have spent months trying to cobble together a package of police funding bills to help combat attacks on the campaign trail, spent Thursday morning struggling to get the votes to pass it, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Several progressive Democrats have threatened to vote against it, and the House went into recess as the leadership tried to sort it out. House Democratic leaders appear to have convinced one progressive Democrat -- Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts -- to vote "present" in order to secure enough votes to pass the long-stalled police funding package that vulnerable members have been demanding, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
Several other progressive Democrats plan to vote no, so the vote will be close but it's expected to pass.

WASHINGTON Legislation to increase funding for local police departments has hit a snag on Capitol Hill amid deep Democratic divisions, as progressives balk at steering more money to law enforcement and moderates clamor for action that could blunt Republicans efforts to paint them as soft on crime ahead of the midterm elections.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pledged for weeks to bring up a package of bills that would provide funding for hiring more police officers, increasing salaries and investing in officer safety and training and body cameras, as well as mental health resources for officers.
But the measures, championed by vulnerable Democrats from conservative-leaning districts, have become mired in a yearslong internal feud about the politics of crime, leaving the party without an answer to Republican attacks and some of its members livid.
I have heard a whole host of reasons for people wanting to excuse inaction, said Representative Abigail Spanberger, Democrat of Virginia, who is in a difficult re-election race in a competitive district that includes the suburbs of Richmond, and is a lead proponent of the legislation. The sort of generalized excuses Ive heard it a lot. Tomorrow it will be, Its raining.

So though there may be facts in the articles, the one sidedness is troubling.

(31,997 posts)The Speaker decides what legislation is to be voted on and so there is no point for the minority party to develop anything since it will not be called for a vote or heard in committee. So of course the media will focus on the legislation of the majority party since that is the only game in town.
