Is because she has a harsh voice. Too much force.

(38,485 posts)I found her off-putting in the beginning, but I'm past it now. She's quite good, IMO.

(47,420 posts)but I just can't stay with it. I remember her daytime show on MSNBC years ago and I had no problem with her back then. Since, she has developed an annoying vocal fry that is really hard to listen to. It is, however, fixable. First step is to recognize that you have a problem and address it. As a rule, people don't naturally talk that way. It is something that is acquired over time.
It is a shame, as I think I could like her program, but that voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I would say I don't understand some of the negative reaction to her but then........ I know what it is.

(13,498 posts)rather annoying at time. Wish Jean Psaki had taken over Rachels show. Better yet I wish she had not left administration.

(5,275 posts)She has an engaging personality and seems quite intelligent. I dont think her voice harsh at all either.
I guess voices is like beauty.....in this case its in the ears of he beholder

(226 posts)She is forceful but Id like to see her modulate her affect .she has very little range in my opinion ability to dial it down and know when to do that

(1,682 posts)...I'm listening right now to what I deem to be her pretty much normal voice. Some people seem to try to search for reasons to trash this woman, for what, I don't know, but she's doing a great job on her show.

(9,696 posts)Maybe unwitting, but sexist none the less.
Personally, Im really sensitive to peoples voices, and I just cant get past Alex Wagners voice. It really grates on me. Ive tried watching her show several times now, and I have to change the channel. I feel the same about a couple of other commentators as well, especially Betsy Woodruff Swan and Tiffany Cross. This may be a weird quirk, but it has nothing to do with sexism.

(21,130 posts)It's likely not sexist as much it is the octave/range tonal quality going through the ear; shit happens when you get older.
Let's not assign the issue to sexism as a reason simply because the complaint is about a female. It's likely the cochlea of the person with the issue.
I've heard men do the same thing and after awhile it is difficult to listen to. It sounds pretentious and condescending and reminds me of William F. Buckley years ago. I remember my husband unconsciously imitating Buckley after watching him on TV. As soon as I pointed it out, he quit, though he occasionally did it over the years when he was talking down to people.
In the 1970s, we had a friend who taught at Northwestern and one evening he started talking like that. As soon as we pointed it out to him, he laughed and blamed it on the "snobs" he hung out with at school. Once he was conscious of it, he made an effort not to do it again.

(32,637 posts)They both speak very rapidly, and maybe that's what wears me out. I still like both of them, and I learn from both. But the truth is that I would miss much of what they say if it weren't for the fact that I have the closed captions on. Is that a criticism of them, or me? I'm not sure.
I still tune in regularly. But I find that I have more energy to listen to both Rachel and Alex if I record their shows at night and watch them the next morning. My energy level is higher then.

(13,776 posts)And although I love Rachel, wow, she needs an editor. I don't need to hear the same thing repeated four or five times... three is plenty.
I like your idea of recording shows to match the time of day that suits your energy level!
And to the powers that be at MSNBC: for whatever it's worth, I think Alex is doing great. She had the biggest shoes at MSNBC to step into and they fit her well.

(5,164 posts)She is too happy for me. So much tragedy, you should not seem like youre happy about it imo. I feel the same about the anchor who replaced the 11 th hour, sorry I have forgotten her name. She does not seem quite as happy but she also seems too happy about really crappy stuff.

(13,776 posts)It's really bad. So so so so so so bad.
I genuinely think she has a good heart, but please, Stephanie, you may be the host but the show is not about you and whatever you say you're confused about. Your viewers are as smart as you are... please let your interviewees talk without your asking for explanations.

(47,420 posts)It is as if she isn't really listening to her guests, but planning on what she is going to say next. I miss Brian Williams. He was so good with guests and never cut anyone off. He knew how to at least look like he was listening.
I think a lot of them do that. I watched a video to see after you posted this and she did interrupt one guest who said after he was just going to say that, lol. I think they are good at heart of course but not my style for sure. Actually truth be told I find almost everyone on tv annoying eventually, lol. And what is with this pushing books non stop. I never buy any of these books.

(7,088 posts)I cannot believe he kept his show for years and years. He'd trample all over everyone and wouldn't let them complete a thought (especially women, of course).

I couldn't change the channel fast enough.
Meowmee
(5,164 posts)How someone could have their own show when mostly what they did was shout people down and not let them speak. I guess some liked the shouting etc. What happens or has happened here is mild compared to what I saw years ago on french tv where a group of interviewees devolved to shouting and swearing at each other, but that was probably a rare event.
