WASHINGTON A jury in a federal civil case on Thursday found that Project Veritas, a conservative group known for its deceptive tactics, had violated wiretapping laws and fraudulently misrepresented itself as part of a lengthy sting operation against Democratic political consultants.
The jury awarded the consulting firm, Democracy Partners, $120,000. The decision amounted to a sharp rebuke of the practices that Project Veritas and its founder, James OKeefe, have relied on. During the trial, lawyers for Project Veritas portrayed the operation as news gathering and its employees as journalists following the facts.
Hopefully, the decision today will help to discourage Mr. OKeefe and others from conducting these kind of political spy operations and publishing selectively edited, misleading videos in the future, Robert Creamer, a co-founder of Democracy Partners, said in a statement after the jury had reached a verdict. ... Project Veritas said it would appeal the decision.
In 2016, according to testimony and documents introduced at the trial, Project Veritas carried out a plan to infiltrate Democracy Partners, which worked for Hillary Clintons presidential campaign through the Democratic National Committee. ... As part of the ruse, a Project Veritas operative posing as a wealthy donor named Charles Roth mentioned to Mr. Creamer that he wanted to make a $20,000 donation to a progressive group that was also a client of Mr. Creamer.

(19,060 posts)Taking the SCOTUS out of the equation, you're seeing a judiciary that is holding up against the Right Wing assault on our Democracy.
The Federal judiciary is not unbalanced, 407 of 791 Federal judges were named by Dem Presidents. And 156 of the 384 named by Republican Presidents were named by Reagan or one of the Bush's. Orange Hitler has named 227 judges that are sitting. Yes, some of those are corrupt as we saw with Cannon, but the vast majority are just regular conservative judges who respect the law. Trump has put perhaps 20 or 30 corrupt judges on the bench, which is a travesty, but not a threat to our legal system.
Hold the Senate, which we're heavily favored to do, and Biden can get another 100+ judges through. The rule of law is holding and it's going to continue to hold.

(6,820 posts)but I'm betting the individuals whose standing before the law may be compromised by a corrupt judge will think differently. Every injustice is a blaring example of a failed justice system, especially if you're on the receiving end of an unappealable error.

(57,080 posts)In his closing statement, Mr. Calli said Project Veritas had engaged in deceit, deception and dishonesty. The group used those tactics, he said, so Project Veritas can speak truth to power.

(2,809 posts)Representing themselves as "moral, responsible, Christian" while publicly utilizing egregiously underhanded tactics does for their broader PR?
TFG normalized these shenanigans for the red hatted doofus club, but even an inkling of integrity?
My sister in law used to say "It all comes out in the wash". Damn, how many rinse cycles will it take with these filthy fools?

(1,937 posts)Should be in prison for his attempts to wiretap Democratic politicians, How many times did he succeed before he was caught? Oh I forgot it's OK if you are a republican, you're above the rule of law. Just ask the former traitor in chief!
