When people show you who they are, believe them the first time. Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou, meet Herschel Walker, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Here he is on the Inflation Reduction Act: A lot of money, its going to trees. . . . Weve got enough trees. Dont we have enough trees around here?
And on school shootings: What about gettin a department that can look at young men thats lookin at women thats looking at just social media? What about doing that?

Through such acts of gibberish, Walker has shown us who he is and then some. So when the would-be Georgia senator said last week, Im not that smart, well, its not like anyone fainted from shock. Unless it was shock that he spoke the truth, something with which Walker who has claimed both a college degree and FBI experience he does not have has little acquaintance.
He was answering a reporters question about his preparation for an Oct. 14 debate with incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock. Im this country boy, said Walker. Im not that smart. And hes that preacher, hes a smart man, wear these nice suits. So hes gonna show up and embarrass me.
Some observers considered this an effort to lower expectations, so that Walker wins the debate by pronouncing his own name right when he takes the stage. Thats at odds, though, with the fact that Walker keeps claiming Warnock is afraid to debate him. For the record, it was Walker who declined an Oct. 13 date because, he said, he didnt want to be scheduled against Sunday night football. ..............(more)

(9,988 posts)The family that manufactures the favorite AR-15 for mass murders is a big supporter. Daniel Defense made the assault weapon used in Uvalde, and the owners (Marty Daniel and his wife) have made millions selling their murder tools. The Daniels know that Walker will not think for himself (does he even have the ability) and they can tell him how to vote in the Senate.

(189 posts)will prefer a self confessed not very smart country boy to an educated, knowledgeable, elegant and experienced Senator who is absolutely conversant on every issue that faces our country today. I hope that ignorance, ideology or gerrymandering will be overcome by people who prefer intelligence to not very smart.

Republicans are supporting Walker's candidacy. They want to present him as a simple country boy in order to appeal to a stereotype of rural Blacks in Georgia.
They are painting a picture of Warnock as an elite who can't relate to ordinary people. So they don't give a damn about issues. They just want to present images for people to relate to.
I don't believe that it will work.

(189 posts)The republicans are treacherous and have little association with reality. Scary and depraved.

(111,255 posts)and they thought that's what they needed to run against a black Democrat with brains and compassion.
Walker might have been a genius on the football field, but he is one dumb guy off it and he's too dumb to know he's dumb. He would get an office full of slick Republican white people who would tell him how to vote and he'd do it.
I just hope his former star power isn't fooling anyone.

Herschel Walker signed pro football's richest contract ever Wednesday, jumping from his junior year at the University of Georgia to the New Jersey Generals of the fledgling United States Football League. The Heisman Trophy-winning tailback, a three-time All-America, signed a three-year pact worth an estimated $5 million just hours after university officials declared him ineligible to finish his college career.
Just last Friday, reacting to published reports, the 20-year-old star told a news conference here that he planned to return to the Bulldogs for his senior season, and still hoped to run as an amateur in the sprints at the 1984 Olympics. Now, as a professional, the Olympics are out for Walker, and college coaches warned Wednesday that the signing of the talented junior by the USFL could lead to a war between the colleges and the new league. "The USFL has just slammed the door in our face, and it hurts," said Charlie McClendon, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association.
There also were fears in the established National Football League that the rich contract Walker signed could lead to an escalation of salaries through pro football, such as occurred when Joe Namath signed with the New York Jets of the old American Football League in 1965. Walker passed up a chance to become college football's all-time rusher. He gained 5,259 yards in his three seasons at Georgia, only 823 less than Tony Dorsett's four-year NCAA record. He ran for 1,752 yards and scored 17 touchdowns in winning the Heisman last season.
Walker's signing followed five days of controversy which prompted an investigation by the NCAA into the reports that he had signed with the USFL team last Thursday in violation of the NCAA's rules on eligibility. He had and, on Wednesday, was forced to cut his collegiate career to three years. "He's a millionaire right now," Jack Manton, Walker's agent, said outside Walker's off-campus apartment in Athens. "It's the highest contract ever in pro football history by far."
