Roger Waters gigs in Poland cancelled amid Ukraine backlash

Planned concerts in Poland by Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters have been cancelled amid outrage over the musician's stance on the Ukraine war.

The concert's promoter, Live Nation Poland, confirmed the cancellation but gave no reason for it.

The controversy was triggered by an open letter Waters wrote to Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska.

In it, he said, "extreme nationalists" in Ukraine "have set your country on the path to this disastrous war".

He accused her husband, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, of failing to fulfil his election campaign promises to bring peace to the Donbas region and and made no mention of Russia's responsibility for the war.

In response, Mrs Zelenska wrote on Twitter that it was Russia which invaded Ukraine and was now destroying its cities and killing civilians. "Roger Waters, you should ask for peace from the president of another country," she wrote.

Mr Water's open letter led Łukasz Wantuch, a Krakow city councillor, to urge people to boycott the concerts.

City councillors have drafted a resolution to declare Mr Waters persona non grata, due to be voted on at a session on September 28.

He can be cavalier with his slurs - his song "Leaving Beirut" included a name for Italians that rhymes with cops, and he's used a slur for Japanese that rhymes with ship on "The Final Cut" as well.

It's something I've seen and recognized for years, but kind-of looked the other way because he seemed to have good intentions and was just dropping lines like a cranky old man.

Now I'm not so sure about some of the parts of the Wall.

Waters walked away from PF decades ago, declaring the band to be played out. Then they, led by David Gilmour, turned around and produced two beautiful albums, infused with Gilmour’s, Wright’s and Mason’s sheer talent, warmth and humanity, and with none of Water’s edgy bitterness.

David Gilmour has also been quite vocal and supportive of Ukraine’s cause.

The whole concert is on YouTube and many versions of it.

The show is overtly political, and I can agree with some/most of it, but Waters thinks Julian Assange is a hero and Ukraine belongs to Russia.

I'm not giving up my PF albums either. But, mostly, I just watch concerts on YouTube.

If you’ve seen his video in Mexico City of “Pigs (three different ones)” where he makes fun of Trump, or his last album, where he refers to him as “a leader with no fucking brains”, it’s pretty clear he despises Trump.

I think Roger’s problem is the same moral absolutism that made Julian Assange and Edward Snowden momentary heroes. When you decide the West is always wrong, you end up siding with anti-Westerners, even when those anti-Westerners are evil.

I’m definitely conflicted, because he’s clearly talented. He’s just wrong about some things. But, I also knew he was an asshole after learning how he treated Rick Wright.

Love spent most of it lambasting other artists who were at the event. I saw it and took an instant dislike to the guy. He's also a dyed-in-the-wool right-wing Republican, as is replacement Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. Brian Wilson is on record as disavowing any political associations with them.

is a big ol' pile of shit.

I get that the guy is anti-violence of all types, and anti-state-mandated violence even more, and especially even more state mandated violence that financially benefits the corporations that get paid to create those wars - but I was quite appalled at his last concert when his sentiment of basically "Ukraine could have saved a lot of lives if it had just surrendered" was expressed.

Sorry, Roger - no. Sometimes even the non-violent have to say no to being invaded.

He isn't a "shredder" but he can wring more emotion out of a single note than most other guitarists can manage in a whole catalog of music. His Pulse Concert "Comfortably Numb" solo still gives me shivers and brings a tear to my eye. His solo work is outstanding and he releases new and old music on his YouTube channel.

Floyd continued to be amazing without Waters. Gilmore, Wright and Mason did not need Waters base, vocals, or EGO.
