It's not the wind that will get you in a hurricane, it's the water. But in this case, it's both.

NBC News interviewed an older couple and the woman was flat-out refusing to leave. I’ve been watching local Fort Myers news, and it had an interview with a guy who lives on the sixth floor of a beachfront condo that has no seawall. He’s staying as well.

I think we are sadly going to see the consequences of all the development right on beaches that has occurred in Florida over the years. The condo man did raise a good point, though — the condo association has been trying for a long time to get the seawall built, but it’s been put off mainly because of environmental concerns. Work was to have started — finally — on Nov. 1. He was frustrated, to say the least, and I don’t blame him.

I’ve been to Sanibel, and I am sick at what might be left of it after today.

Thoughts are with all affected today.

7. This may sound harsh, but as a life long Floridian, I don't have much sympathy for the seawall issue

Hurricanes are are part of life in Florida. IMO, there should be a setback on ANY building near the beach. The danger is well known.

Seawalls destroy the ecosystems. Beaches are going to erode and expand over time. It's just a fact of life.

As far as staying for a Cat 5. Good luck with that.
