Last night, a tornado hit a town in Palm Beach County. I'm in Palm Beach County and this morning, I received texts and calls from family and friends around the country to see if I was okay, or was there anything they could do, or send.
I told them all I'm fine, safe, and thanked them for checking. And I'm thankful to have not been near this horrible disaster.
Ian is a nightmare that is doing damage to Florida that will take years to make right. And it ain't over yet.
A friend with whom I'm staying has power, had the TV on, and I caught a segment of news covering a Ron DeSantis news conference. He spent quite a while explaining everything (in detail) about all he was doing. And then he called others to the podium who were concerned about the storm, but spewed many words complementing DeSantis, thanking him for all he was doing, and spending just a bit too much time kissing his ass. I watched for a while then turned it off in disgust.
There I was, safe, and watching a bunch of appointed people thanking the prick who is our governor for doing the basic, minimum part of his job. In the meantime, a couple of million people on Florida's west coast are fearing for their survival.
At this moment, Hurricane Ian is hitting FL hard and I fear for all who are not safe and dry. And I also know that DeSantis doesn't give a shit how many of them lose everything they have, or live or die. He's just glad that he had the opportunity that he could show he "cared," and wouldn't throw rolls of paper towels to a crowd of desperate people.
Right now, Florida is a scary, horrible place to be. And DeSantis is using it for his own ambitions.
Perhaps he can fly everyone in Florida to Martha's Vineyard.
