(8,387 posts)I live in an area in which, once in a long while, floods rise above undeveloped flood plains (for that reason), but we don't get significant earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires or other large-scale wonders of nature.
I would expect the cost of insurance reflects the relative incidence of these sorts of things, no?

(17,536 posts)They do not want to write insurance in places where you need it, but are happy to sell policies in low risk areas. I told the homeowners insurance business to go to hell earlier this year. I will assume my own risk and they can do without my premiums. I just wish I had made this choice 50 years ago.
There was a time in Florida, where we had a strong insurance commission that kept the companies in check. That sailed away with Democratic governance.
