The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff." Carl Sagan

Our Sun is a second- or third-generation star. All of the rocky and metallic material we stand on, the iron in our blood, the calcium in our teeth, the carbon in our genes were produced billions of years ago in the interior of a red giant star. We are made of star-stuff.

And from the TV show Cosmos, spoken by him:

The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore we’ve learned most of what we know. Recently, we’ve waded a little way out, maybe ankle-deep, and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return, and we can because the cosmos is also within us. We’re made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.

and sub to me for religion. Who needs a deity who can be serene knowing we're eternally part of something magnificent beyond comprehension: "not a bit of you is gone, you're just less orderly."

at Cornell in the 70’s when I lived in Manhattan. Was in Ithaca for the weekend and we were walking across campus when I grabbed his arm and said ‘Is that Carl Sagan?!’ He said yeah, you want to meet him?

Was the thrill of my year

I would love to have asked him a question about something. But if I had the opportunity, I’m sure I would either forget to ask him, or ask a really stupid question.

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me...

We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden!

Looking forward to perhaps returning to a "musical" stardust twinkle of light in the cosmos!
