Also a bit surprised that that there weren't already procedures in place to prevent this (but maybe competitive fishing is--or was--the last honorable sport)...

When most everything in the world is winner-take-all, most everyone becomes a cheater by necessity.

fishing tournaments. Smaller stakes but still a big deal. People with ample means competing for a couple thousand backs in the pool. Weekly pay outs. They police themselves and know if something is iffy.

planting fish in an old washing machine basket that they had caught the week before the tournament. If there is money involved someone will cheat.

Every year someone is caught doing that. Not even the ladies tournaments are immune.

I live near the rod and gun club. Years ago they had a woodchuck hunt. The hats and mugs read "Woodchuck hunt '99: Look out, they are getting smarter". ha ha. Wasn't sure if the smarters were the animal chucks or the people chucks. The guy in charge of the BBQ was wearing a black t-shirt with a pic of a red/white/blue condom and it read "Cover me. I'm going in". ha ha, holy crap. Anyway, on Monday, two students told me that they won. (The chucks are weighed and heaviest wins). They said they cheated. They shot a chuck a year ago, filled it with 7 Up and froze it, then thawed it for the contest. Wow, what kids will use their smarts for!

Author Carl Hiaasan has a very funny book and it features characters going to many lengths to cheat fishing tournaments.

How many people knew about it? There could be lawsuits and prison if multiple people were involved.

Multiple media outlets, including the Toledo (Ohio) Blade, have reported that Hermitage resident Chase Cominsky and Jake Runyon, of Cleveland, had been the event's apparent winners until a tournament official cut open one of the fish they caught, as seen in a YouTube video (WARNING: The video contains explicit language), and produced weights, which would have increased the poundage of their catch.

Observers and officials had suspected Cominsky and Runyon as long ago as last year — the YouTube video was titled, in part, "Lake Erie Walleye Trail Cheater Chase Cominsky and Jake Runyan finally got caught."

In 2021, the Toledo Blade reported that Cominsky and Runyan were disqualified from the Fall Brawl fishing event, after they had apparently won, because one of them had failed a polygraph test.
