Judy Tenuta, brash 'Goddess of Love' comedian, dies at 72

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Judy Tenuta, a brash standup who cheekily styled herself as the "Goddess of Love” and toured with George Carlin as she built her career in the 1980s golden age of comedy, died Thursday. She was 72.

Tenuta died Thursday afternoon at home in Los Angeles, with her family around her, publicist Roger Neal told The Associated Press. The cause of death was ovarian cancer.

“She was a very funny, amazing performer," Neal said, and it was always a “happy time to be around her."

Tenuta had claimed her birthdate as Nov. 7, 1965, but she was born in 1949, Neal said. “She was old school so she would never tell her real age but now that she’s gone we can tell her real age,” he added.

6. One Of My Favorite Bits From Her...

...was telling about her trip through Tennessee.
She got pulled over and the cop she had a snippy "Northern Attitude ". She says "We call it intelligence!"
She got arrested for smuggling books, but they let her off "because they couldn't prove it."
My wife & I saw her at a small comedy club in the Chicago suburbs around 1980, or so.
A few years later she was on HBO!
We were glad for her.

Probably most people didn't. I was in high school or maybe in my first year in college when I first heard of her. I'd wondered what happened to her; I always enjoyed her comedy.

I hadn't seen her in a long time, but I always loved her appearances (usually on MTV?) back in the 90s or so when I was a kid growing up.

I always thought she was younger than she actually was; I figured she was only a bit older than me, so, maybe in her 50s or so? Maybe late 50s? But judging from the quote from the article, I guess it makes sense why we were fooled: she lied about her age! haha She did have such a youthful quality about her that she could pull it off!
