What its like to have a parent radicalized by Trump and QANON. The Marine Corps prepared me for a lot of stuff, but not this. Hard to know how to off-ramp this kind of thinking. Unreal the stakes in this election.

(2,538 posts)Reminds me of my dad becoming a fan of Limbaugh. He retired from the Air Force in Sacramento and listened to KFBK. He had been a fan of radio since he was a kid and Rush entertained him. I wasnt around to aim him to better material. He had been a fan of Capt. Carrot on the rock fm station KZAP. Things changed.

(34,062 posts)the thing is--she was never a limbaugh type. i grew up with her telling me to "open your mind" and "keep an open mind" so that turn was really out of character for her. i remember we talked about it until she believed me -- and until she finally saw it.

i read through the twitter replies, and it is shocking and sad how many people lost loved ones to this cult of hate and fear. When I returned from twitter, I was glad to be back in the land of comments and insights. I have laughed at DU's comments, funny and sometimes mean, all my years here. in gratitude, is my reply

(14,858 posts)Not a chance. It's a religion, and these are religious beliefs. Religious beliefs aren't rational, by definition. They'll pull the lamest excuses out of their asses to continue to believe what they believe.
"God heard our prayers and intervened. Praise the Lord!"
"Trump somehow secretly stopped it from happening."
,
"It's still going to happen, it was just postponed for whatever reason."
"It actually did happen, but the news of it was suppressed by the deep state."
Etc.

(113,464 posts)is ALWAYS some reason why it has been delayed. The person who keeps me apprised of this nonsense is so embedded in it that a brief power outage the other night had her convinced that it had started. I pointed out that the high wind warnings for Sat/Sun had been out for days, so it was not unexpected.
I keep shaking my head over the convoluted insanity, which gets more so every day. And I had thought that the whole "sovereign citizen" thing was beyond absurd. Those people sound almost sane in comparison.
