Arizona sheriff steps up security around ballot drop boxes

This is what happens when people believe the lies the far Right Wing has been selling for the last two years.

The boxes have become a hotbed for conspiracy theories alleging without evidence that people illegally collected and deposited ballots in them. PHOENIX — The sheriff in metropolitan Phoenix said Monday he’s stepped up security around ballot drop boxes after a series of incidents involving people keeping watch on the boxes and taking video of voters after they were apparently inspired by lies about the 2020 election.

On Friday, deputies responded when two masked people carrying guns and wearing bulletproof vests showed up at a drop box in Mesa, a Phoenix suburb. The secretary of state said her office has received six cases of potential voter intimidation to the state attorney general and the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as a threatening email sent to the state elections director.

and monitored by polling place staff. I'm okay with this. I dropped my wife's absentee ballot off at the same location where I voted early. Didn't even have to stand in line to do it. To be honest, I never really liked the idea of un-monitored drop boxes. Too much opportunity for mischief.

If there are any issues, the poll workers can call the police. But I can tell you, I saw the drop box being used while I was there for early voting, and there were no issues.

The drop boxes are under 24-hour video monitoring. Armed MAGATs are still camping out. But you don’t want the Democratic sheriff enforcing laws?

"This American Life" (Ira Glass) took a look at what's going on with these sadly misguided people who think they need to watch the elections.

It's the story of a old-school republican election official in AZ who observes all the nuts signing up to be precinct committee members. Her name is Kathy. She takes the time and trouble to look up the backgrounds of these applicants. Of course they were election deniers. Many had never voted! In meetings, however, the deniers would tell her about massive voter fraud. Of course, Kathy, was the one who certified the vote and she knew it was not fraudulent. She refused to play into the lies.

Kathy decides she's not goint to let the nut cases become precinct committee members. (They are referred to as PCs throughout the narrative.) This is the story of Kathy's encounters with them.

Scroll to "Magazona."

Having listened to this, I walked away shaking my head at people who waste their time on a nothing issue.

There is so much to do in the world, but there seems to be a group of people who are unable to discern priorities. That seems to be a consistency one finds with republicans, which I am sure you have noticed. They are always off the mark with their choice of issues on which to take action.
