relief optionAs the federal government fights with states and other groups over its expansive student loan debt forgiveness plan, the Education Department said Tuesday it will make permanent some temporary changes to a program that makes it easier for people working as teachers, public defenders and other public sector workers to have their student loan debt forgiven.
Loan forgiveness for these workers has been available for years, but very few people have been able to use the option because of complex rules about eligibility.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said he was appalled to learn that fewer than 7,000 borrowers had ever received relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program when he joined the Education Department last year.
Last year, the Biden administration simplified the application process, temporarily, allowing 236,000 people to have more than $14 billion in student loans forgiven. The one-time changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness plan are set to expire on Oct. 31.

(182,847 posts)1. Mine got denied because of the wrong type of loans
I just put in a consolidation application today. MOHELA is servicing my loan so I kept them for the consolidation- they already have my PSLF application. MOHELA is supporting a lawsuit trying to fight loan forgiveness but I stuck with them.
I also applied for the one time $20k forgiveness. There was a note that that is stalled legally (as the article says). Well see.

(2,457 posts)2. I was told it can take 30-60 days for consolidation to occur...
This late in the game, might be too late to qualify.

(646 posts)3. as long as you consolidate, and send to MOHELA, ...also have to use the PSLF tool as well
but as long as it's in process by tomorrow, the PSLF tool is submitted by tomorrow, the fax is sent to MOHELA by tomorrow...
then you can get your signatures from employer as it's being processed.
There's guidance on that but I'm too lazy to find it for you. It's at studentaid.gov though.
