I had an asshole tell me that he thought Putin would make a better leader than Biden. He said "Brandon" but I knew what he meant.
I knew there were people out there siding with Putin over Ukraine, but I had never actually met one that desired Putin as a leader.
This moron claimed he liked Putin because he was "more of a Capitalist than Marxist Brandon."
I felt like punching the fool, but didn't because I'm a peaceful man.
Not that long ago such a statement would have been totally unheard. It would have been considered unpatriotic, even treasonous. Now, morons sit on barstools and proclaim their desire for dictators.
This is not the America I grew up in.

(17,988 posts)They say things like that because they know it will get a reaction. The truth is they would run like scared rabbits if confronted.
You had what, a thousand who actually stormed the Capitol in the heat of the moment, brave because they were in a mob. Now the chips are down, the adrenaline is gone, in court they are whining like babies. Oh, consider my kids, my family, etc. I promise to be good.
Even that day most of the crowd left because they were too smart to get involved.
The Father who said Branden to the President on a Christmas call to his son was a poor example to his children!

If he really loves Putin that much, it would be reasonable that he'd like to do that.

(391 posts)Tell them they're Commies. Putin was born a Communist, served in high level positions in the Communist regime. His beliefs in Communism haven't changed. If he's supporting Comrade Putin, he's actually a Communist.

(3,244 posts)I don't think it made a difference. That is the depressing part.
He claimed Biden was "already a dictator", and that the insurrectionists who beat police on Jan 6 were in his words "political prisoners".
The right- wing propaganda machine has made logical discourse impossible in this country. So very depressing.

(10,252 posts)They don't want to hear anything that pierces their delusions. Facts be damned. Evidence is all lies. To them, we are the evil "other." They make us wrong to make themselves feel "right." I feel very very sad, because I don't have the skillful words to get thru to them. I know that a big part that drives their hatred is plain ol' white racism. Add in "my religion is real, and yours is not." It's a cult.

(3,976 posts)My RWNJ 68-year-old brother-in-law has actually said that he doesn't want to hear anything that will change his core beliefs. He's a homophobe, broke, driving a 25-year-old car he inherited from his late father, never had a girlfriend or any friends, living in an old mobile home on SS and nothing else. Thank Goddess he doesn't vote.

(1,153 posts)that this is not the America you grew up in. I grew up a half century ago in the reddest part of Texas. It is absolutely the "America that I grew up in". Much of the terminology has changed, when the people are not interested in introspection, much less in understanding the world, then terms are fungible or meaningless. People in those conditions organize their lives around gut feelings and beliefs. The underlying principle in Texas then, in Putin's Russia now, and in more and more of the US is authoritarianism. One characteristic of authoritarianism is its desire to metastasize, like many other cancers. If the US is very fortunate we may get a period like The Compromise of 1850 to prepare for the inevitable attempt to expand by the Authoritarian party, née Republican, and there may be enough US voters to overcome the gerrymandering, disenfranchisement, and suppression of the Authoritarian party.

(1,153 posts)I'm gay and I have Asperger's. In seventh grade my classmates tried to set me on fire. The principal told my Mom that I would need to learn how to fight. In ninth grade my geography teacher told my class that I should be killed. I knew that I had to leave. After high school I worked for a year and a half at the slaughterhouse, the only unskilled job that paid more than minimum wage, to save money for college. Then, after I got my nursing license I moved to Dallas where I worked for thirty years. Now I have semi-retired to five acres of tropical fruits and flowers in Florida. For me it really did get better, I was extremely fortunate.

(32,773 posts)Putin is one of the wealthiest men in the world, it's true. But his money doesn't come from capitalism, and he' has never run a business in his life. Putin came to power by systematically stealing the natural resources (mainly oil) of Russia. Putin put his friends in power and gave them financial/legal advantages that no one else got, and that's who the oligarchs are. They make money by stealing it in one way or another, and they all give half their income to Putin. That's why he's wealthy, and he never did a thing to earn it except plunder the natural resources of his country.
It sickens me the way Repukes worship him - it's so wrong and misguided. If the Russian people ever found out what he has done to Russia since the "revolution," he'd get the Mussolini treatment. I'm certain of it.

(57,073 posts)The young man struck up a conversation with me, because, well, they cannot ever shut their mouths.
He began spewing how much better russia is than the USA because they don't have to pay taxes.
I told him I don't know a lot about russia because their govt always has lied consistently about conditions there. I told him, though, "one thing I do know is they don't have access to food like we do here." That got his interest.
I continued, asking him how he would like to stand in line for hours to buy only a loaf of bread. Then, when it was his turn, only to be told there was no bread for him to buy.
All the color drained from his face. Lol
I continued, but if you really love russia, I'll buy you a one-way ticket so you can live your dream. (Of course, I wouldn't, but I could see this kid, skin & bones, likely loaded with parasites from the pervasive pattern of walking around without shoes on, would have quite an aversion to hunger.)
He declined the offer.

(6,617 posts)I have come to the conclusion that people who have experienced a lot of trouble in their lives have to find something or someone to blame. Most magats I meet fit that bill. Their lives are so shitty, they needed someone like Rush Limbaugh or Tucker Carlson to tell them it's all the fault of the liberals- and they suck it up. It makes them feel better about the problems in their lives to hate others. I guess I would call them sociopaths who have been brought together with a weird commonality sparked by fascist assholes on the radio or TV who only care about making money off of them. All of them I meet seem to have that in common. Fascist elite corporate owners have learned how to use them for their own gains. They are just too stupid to realize it.
