It is not ok to wear a nazi outfit as your halloween costume

Just as it is not ok to wear a kkk outfit etc. that is all…. I want to point out that that is part of normalizing fascism imo. And it is not ok. See, I said something very important, without twitter or any source other than myself. 😀

He's a privileged old white man who doesn't get to tell people what they are allowed to be offended by or not.

As an example, at my last job our old boss was semi-retiring (stepping down as boss by staying employed there as a senior advisor). One person on the team took it on herself to be the official party planner and decided on a theme of us all wearing Native American-style headbands with one feather each and at the party we'd each take our feather out and give it to the old boss to make a full chief style headdress.

I told her I thought that was inappropriate culture appropriation as no one involved was vaguely Native American and I didn't want to be seen (and god forbid photographed) at work dressed up in someone else's cultural symbols particularly since part of our job involves consulting with indigenous people and we had an in-house cultural advisory team who could have walked past at any minute. She'd already bought the feathers though and would not be talked out of it.

So I sent her a bunch of videos and websites I'd found on cultural appropriation. One that impacted me in particular (and sorry a quick google is not turning it up at the moment) was from a Native Hawaiian woman who talking about going to school as a child and being beaten and humiliated by her teacher for wearing cultural garments and how it made her feel now to see clueless white people on Instagram getting thousands of likes for wearing the same thing.

Other peoples' cultures are not a costume for privileged white people to don for fun. And I don't think there is anything wrong with pointing out that Halloween costumes can be a racist mess and we should be trying to be better to the extent that we know better.

As for dressing as a Nazi, it depends on the context but would probably generally not be a great idea. There's probably a way to do it that makes fun of Nazis or provides a wider social context (like Trump or Bannon as a Nazi) but then there's still the risk of triggering Holocaust survivors or their descendants so why bother when there are so many other options?

I assume you understand that wearing a costume for a part in a film/ theatre is not the same as a person dressing up as a nazi for halloween.
In that case it was meant as satire. Theatrical reasons can be evaluated individually… it is not always ok in that realm.

It was wrong when Prince Harry did it and it was wrong when this guy did it…it’s not OK.

Not really sure why that would make any of this ok. Why do people dress up as Nazis… I can assure you it is not to warn us about Nazis it’s to let us know that they support Nazis or whatever else they’re dressing up as and it is to intimidate people or to try to.maybe is also a joke to them and they think it’s funny, but the first is the main one as well as to provoke a reaction.

But it IS a pagan celebration and has a lot of darkness associated with it for a start.

I don't know if there really is a way to make this Holiday "politically correct" but yeah, could just be an excuse to wear his Nazi suit and throw it in people's faces with the excuse, "It's just Halloween."

Grandkids are going as zombies and I'll be steampunk handing out candy.

A man in a Nazi uniform was intimidated into leaving a Soho bar as patrons shamed and threatened him.

The incident was captured on a video posted to Twitter Saturday night, as costumed Halloween revelers imbibed across the boroughs.

In the clip, the smiling young man, donning full regalia including a swastika armband, sidled up to the bar at Fanelli Cafe, leaving other patrons aghast.

The would-be customer shrugged as he appeared to be denied service and exchanged words with a patron who told him to leave in vulgar terms.
