Jimmy Kimmel practically attacks Donald Trump on every episode of his late night show, but the host says he was initially asked by ABC to tone down his trolling. When he predictably said no, the network backed down, giving Kimmel as much airtime to rip Trump as he pleased in the past six years.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live host revealed on todays episode of Phil Rosenthal and David Wilds Naked Lunch podcast that ABC broached the subject of his Trump coverage early on, but never brought up the subject again.
Rosenthal initiated the conversation, wondering if ABC ever asked Kimmel, Could you not just attack this side and lay off a little bit, because were going to lose those people? per The Hollywood Reporter.
Kimmel confirmed that losing republican viewers was a worry of ABCs, telling Rosenthal, There was at one time, maybe, I dont know, right around the beginning of this whole Trump thing where
that was kind of hinted at, but I just said, Listen, I get it. I dont disagree. I mean, youre right.
While Kimmel understood the networks concerns, he gave them an ultimatum, telling them he would walk if they wanted to pull back from the Trump critiques.
I just said, if thats what you want to do, I understand and I dont begrudge you for it, but Im not going to do that, Kimmel said. So if you want somebody else to host the show, then thats fine. Thats OK with me. Im just not going to do it like that.
The late night host said ABC didnt push back and met his request with an all right, telling the podcast, They knew I was serious. I just couldnt live with myself. Love ya Jimmy.

(1,322 posts)This strikes me as just another supposedly reliable "authority" figure I am expected to take on faith yet whose credentials haven't ever been established with me. Hell, I never heard of them before, probably a sign of my own finite resources. Plenty to argue with in that chart, WSJ just for starters. I used to think the Gray Lady was unimpeachable too, but then along came Judy Miller . . .

*Obscure movie reference. Well, maybe not that obscure. After all, Peter O'Toole was in it.

(30,114 posts)I do love his whole show. He just fits in his own skin when interviewing his guests, and his side kick??? Love him. I heard that his side kick Guillermo Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who is Mexican-American, recalls his origins with the show. Back in the day, he was a parking lot security guard and once got caught sleeping in announcer Dicky Barrett's car.
"We come here to work, to work hard, and we always want to do our best and improve ourselves," he says. "When I got this job, I was in the parking lot and I was sleeping in Dicky's car, the announcer. He opened the door, he goes, 'What are you doing here?' I go, 'I'm trying to sleep I'm so sorry!'"
"Dicky went straight and told Jimmy, 'Listen, this guy was sleeping in my car,'" he continues. "And Jimmy said, 'We got to put this guy in the show.'"
The TV personality first began appearing in skits during Kimmel's first season in 2003. Though he still maintains his security guard title, he's now a regular fixture alongside Kimmel, 53, on the nightly show.
Escobedo, a childhood friend of Kimmel's, has also been part of Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the jump.
"Jimmy called and said, 'Hey man, I think I'm going to have this show, do you want to be my band leader?' Of course I was like, 'Yes,'" he remembers in the featurette. "It's been the best gig ever."
Yup, love Jimmy Kimmel. ?️ ?️ ?️

Carolla: I used to be a Democrat, now Im basically a Republican.
THR: Why did you switch?
Carolla: First off, I got tired of the whining and the name-calling. If you say you want to beef up the border, they say youre anti-immigrant. If you want people to show I.D. before they vote, then youre for voter suppression. If you want women to pay for their own contraception, then youre anti-women. If youre for traditional marriage, then you hate gay people.

(24,331 posts)IIRC, when Kimmel first took over this late evening time slot, he was regarded as something of an intellectual lightweight, and known for coarse humor.
He has shown himself to be anything but a lightweight.

IMO, his show is FAR above the rest. So clever, so well done behind the scenes. If I had the talent, I would kill to be on his creative staff... it has to be a kick to show up for work every day. And the amount of time/effort/dollars spent on some of these productions is amazing.
And I love the 'attention' he pays to the former's children, especially the older two with the (alleged) XY chromosomes. He totally slays them. And the guy who does Lindell is spot on, he does an even better job than the real Mike!
Love ya Jimmy!
