by Greg PalastNovember 8, 2022
Its going to be murderously difficult for Democrats to win in Georgia tonight. Not because Stacey Abrams and Reverend Raphael Warnock have been rejected by voters, but because new vote suppressing laws have made voting by mail and dropbox overwhelmingly used by Democrats nearly impossible. An 83% decline in mail-in ballots was not the choice of the voters but the choice of Jim Crow.

Georgias Governor Deputized GOP Vigilantes to Challenge 149,000 Voters
Black voters in Georgia say the challenges issued by vigilantes amount to a racist poll tax and a new Jim Crow.
by Greg Palastfor TruthoutNovember 7, 2022
SNIP Under a new law, SB 202, signed by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp last year, self-appointed vigilante vote fraud hunters have, for the first time, the right to challenge an unlimited number of other voters: There shall not be a limit on the number of persons whose qualifications such elector [voter] may challenge.
Unlimited mean unlimited. The man who challenged Turner successfully blocked 4,000 other voters in Columbus. So far, the 159 counties in Georgia have sent the Palast Investigative Fund a breathtaking 149,168 challenges filed against voters.
Our investigators contacted several hundred of these accused voters and they are, overwhelmingly, like Maj. Turner, Black or young.
And in fact, despite the governors hoohah that SB202 prevents voter fraud, not a single one of these hundreds of thousands of allegedly fraudulent voters has been charged, let alone convicted, of the crime of attempting to vote illegally.SNIP

THAT is a Trump evolution.
They learned from him to relentlessly do horrible shit to make it possible to get away with doing horrible shit.

(4,375 posts)challenges were rejected by the county clerks to whom they were directed. Mostly they just seemed to flood the offices with extra work, and almost all the challenges were deemed baseless.
At least, that is how it was reported at the time... roughly 4 weeks ago.
Here is one earlier story about one county:

(7,648 posts)Governor Kemps vigilante vote law does provide targeted voters a way to challenge the challenge. The voter can request a court-like hearing at their county registrars office where they can prove their citizenship and address. They are guilty until they prove themselves innocent of what is, after all, a felony crime.
You have to show up in person to challenge the challenge:
Turner, stationed in California, said he replied to the Muscogee County (Columbus) bureaucrat, So youre telling me, 2600 miles away that if I want to vote that that all I have to do is show up and prove that as an American citizen that I have the right to vote? AGAIN? You talk to fools like that! Im not a fool!
How many of those thousands who were challenged had the time and resources to go to their county clerk's office to undo the challenge?
The law allows for challenges up through election day.
